Lithium producers rallied on Tuesday as investors bet on a rebound in electric car sales in China after the government gave assurances that its subsidies for buyers would not be cut any further.

Shares in Chinese lithium producer Ganfeng Lithium, which supplies Tesla, rose by 8 per cent in Hong Kong on Tuesday, while Tianqi Lithium added 9 per cent in Shenzhen.

The stock of Chilean lithium producer SQM also rose by about 9 per cent in New York on Monday. Shares in the company are now up 15 per cent so far this year.

The gains indicate investors are turning more optimistic on the supply chain for electric cars after a difficult 2019 that saw lithium carbonate prices fall more than 30 per cent due to rapid growth in production and a cut in subsidies in China.

Have a bit of patience, the logic of this deal will become clear to the market in good time. Ganfeng's investment guarantees production at one of the largest and most cost efficient lithium projects in the world. Battery grade lithium is a cornerstone commodity of the coming green economy for decades to come. Not everyone is watching BCN as closely as we are, and the story will take a little time to filter out; there will be some ongoing hesitation around funding, but not for long imho. The re-rate will come, maybe in days, maybe in a weeks, maybe even in months, but it will come.

crazy drop here, for the sake of a week or two's patience. will only make the re-rate steeper for some when it comes I guess. As i suggested before, the chairmen of Chinese companies of Ganfeng's stature do not pose for site photographs half way around the world of projects that they are not committed to. This will happen, and soon imho.

I don't suppose the chairman of Ganfeng would be being photographed in Mexico if he wasn't sure this was a done deal. Completely mystifying why the share price doesn't begin to reflect what is clearly a long-term commitment to produce what will be one of the world's most prized commodities, battery grade lithium, at huge scale, and at excellent margins, for world class clients who have already agreed to purchase the product for decade(s) into the future. They say buy on the rumour and sell on the fact. It's hard to see how this could be a more compelling "rumour" imho. time will tell I guess, but not to long to wait now.

i'm not sure BCN are in a position to accelerate the internal machinations of the exchequer of the People's Republic of China. The timetable mentioned in RNSs is exactly the timetable they are following. A week or two either way is not going to make any difference to the coming rerate imho

Couldn't give a monkey's whether you referred to the government's decision or not, since the last two RNSs have. Much as I enjoy and respect your (somewhat self-aggrandising ) insights, it often seems to me worth giving more attention to the actual information from Ganfeng and BCN.
