Good news this morning with the appointment of Charlean Gmunder to the BOD as an independent Non-Executive Director.
From her CV it looks like she will bring a wealth of practical experience to the Board.

The problem is Neil, that it will be very difficult to find growth in sales above the rate of inflation, therefore, whatever a retailer does it will probably result in a dip in profits.

Also, things like excess transport costs, especially for bulky items and any goods that have come from the Far East, cannot be passed on to the customer in full or the goods become unaffordable.

So we have to be realistic - 2022 will be a very difficult year for all retailers.

I think it will be heavy industry that will be the first to use renewables in a big way, especially with gas likely to stay expensive. These industries will rely on their own supply sources rather than the grid or in industrial areas on local grids.
For example Toyota on Deeside plan to use power produced from household waste by gasification.

The move to renewables will be by big industry first and as you say the rest of us will be waiting for Governments to get their act together - that could take decades.

The tech is now in place to allow big industry to make this move.

In hard times its generally people on lower incomes who suffer most with the retailers they trade with also taking the biggest hit.
M&S tend to have more affluent customers, so it follows that they won't be so badly affected, right across their product range.
But, off course there will be some impact, this is probably already priced into the SP - my guess is that the SP will trade in the range of 140-165p for the rest of the year before taking off again when inflation eases.

Facts are in short supply and a lot depends on what you read and where you read it, but the overwhelming trend globally is for the big money to be heading to develop renewables - follow the money, not the rhetoric - these so called energy experts are just as likely to be wrong as anyone, in most cases they cannot see the wood from the trees, or don't want to.
