RE: RNS at last - great time for a quick top-up! - now we're moving27 Jan 2026 18:42
After a little bit of digging this bit of the RNS stands out to me:
"Computing-power infrastructure and energy technology, with the aim of building a more integrated platform spanning digitalisation, intelligence, computing support and energy assurance."
It seems that after the US bans on exporting NVIDIA GPU's and then backtracking, China has now started restricting them themselves.
https://scanx.trade/stock-market-news/global/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-visits-china-as-h200-chips-face-customs-restrictions/30787877
It got me thinking, what if someone were to build datacenters of NVIDIA GPU's just outside the China border and then supply computing into China? Then I thought could this be done from Hong Kong, Is Hong King subject to the same restrictions? So I asked GPT.
Take this wit a pinch of salt as it's often wrong but, this was the result:
"NVIDIA GPU Restrictions and Hong Kong
Current Status of Restrictions
The restrictions placed on the import of NVIDIA GPUs and advanced semiconductors primarily target mainland China. Hong Kong, operating under a separate customs regime, generally enjoys more lenient access to technology and components. This means:
Import Controls: The stringent export controls and restrictions imposed by the U.S. on semiconductor technology largely do not apply to Hong Kong in the same way they do to mainland China.
Procurement Flexibility: Companies in Hong Kong often have greater flexibility to import high-tech components, including NVIDIA GPUs, compared to those in mainland China.
Regulatory Framework: Hong Kong has its own regulatory system, which differs from that of mainland China, making it easier for companies to access new technologies.
Limitations and Considerations
While Hong Kong has significant advantages regarding access to NVIDIA GPUs, businesses must be mindful of:
Evolving Geopolitical Landscape: As international dynamics shift, potential policy changes could impact access in the future.
Compliance Requirements: Companies must ensure compliance with both local laws and relevant international regulations, even in Hong Kong.
Conclusion
Currently, Hong Kong is not subject to the same restrictions on the import of NVIDIA GPUs as applies to mainland China, making it a strategic location for establishing data centers to meet the demand for advanced computing resources. Would you like more information on logistic considerations or any other specific aspect?"
It struck me in he article that the large Chinese AI companies would like to get access to NVIDIA GPU`s include our old friend Tencent(See previous RNS's about JV with Tencent subsidiary).
Of course we also have links to NVIDIA through their connect programme.
Seems we could be in the sweet spot.
Anyway all putting 2 + 2 together and getting 5 and who knows if GPT speaks with forked tongue.
Certainly interesting times ahead.
