Oh, and btw, you're absolutely spot on with how unexpected events can knock a company’s plans off-course in a way that was unpredicted by PIs. It's in the news today. Cancer has mutated and doxorubicin doesn't work any more. As a consequence, all anticancers now have to go through a new government approval process.

Yes, DTW, it is implicit in the success of a Phase 1 cancer trial that the drug should work as it is being given to people that actually have that condition and are, to all intents and purposes, beyond hope - something that isn't true of drugs given to healthy volunteers in purely PK and dose finding studies (e.g. a heart drug). Success can be surmised by the trial continuing, and with increasing doses, whilst Avacta embarks on several ventures (AVA3996 into preclinical, recruiting key appointments, move to Scale Space, presenting at conference, ODD, biopsies and so on) that together would make absolutely no sense if the drug wasn't working effectively as expected.

May I point out that, to quote from the clinical trial Detailed Description:

"The study will be conducted in two parts: Phase 1a (Dose Escalation) and Phase 1b (Dose Expansion):

Phase 1a (Dose Escalation): The dose-escalation phase is designed to evaluate the safety, tolerability and MTD and/or RP2D of AVA6000, administered as monotherapy.

Phase 1b (Dose Expansion): The dose-expansion phase will comprise 1 to 3 expansion arms in specific tumour types to evaluate the safety and tolerability of AVA6000 at the MTD or RP2D when administered as monotherapy. The tumour types to be explored in Phase 1b, will be determined based on evaluation of the Phase 1a data and the protocol will be amended accordingly."

The 'early efficacy' refers to the whole trial and for Phase 1a will certainly be more qualitative (observational) than quantitative (statistical). That said, any signs of tumour growth being halted or reversed would be a clear sign of efficacy. Also, evidence of activity in the tumour from biospies as well as a reduction or absence of visible and patient-reported side-effects would lend enormous weight to AVA6000 doing what we all hoped and believe it would.

DaProphet, you're absolutely spot on about masks being a nonsense. Complete waste of time for surgeons and the other operating room staff to have to wear them.

Testing will be done on arrival as China not trusted to be honest enough to do testing before departure.

Purpose is to identify new strains. Apparently China currently has our old strains and is not very forthcoming about telling the world about new strains.

Testing on arrival seems... stupid. Makes quarantining and contact tracing difficult, bureaucratic and expensive. Sampling wastewater from the planes would be much more sensible but I guess nothing like as profitable for Tory Party donors, friends and family.
