It is interesting how people will invariably frame arguments to fit with their own political perspective. In the instance of Russia, many people overlook the fact that Putin, and Yeltsin before him, are right of communism and are not leftist in the conventional sense. Many, with some justification, would describe Putin as fascist. I would simply say that he is a corrupt capitalist - he has concentrated power in the hands of a small, elite and very wealthy group of individuals whilst restoring the state’s control that grew out of communism and was dismantled under Gorbachev. In reference to Blair, he was a centrist rather than leftist and not far removed from many tories - who supported him during the Iraq war.
On ‘windfall tax’ it’s clear that, as Jim says, there’s a misunderstanding amongst some here about what constitutes a windfall. Profits from the present conflict cannot be directly compared to all the losses suffered in 2020. The op collapse during early 2020 was primarily caused by a commercial price war between OPEC and US Shale. Separately, Shell, amongst many corporations, would have received government bailouts for furlough etc etc. during covid - which was a separate contemporaneous event. Excessive profits resulting from the current international conflict could undoubtedly be considered as a windfall.
