When you know people who are impacted by this, the decision seems unconscionable.

Sever hardship created for a relatively tiny cost saving, when many multiples of that amount are being given in pay rises - some of which are entirely unnecessary and excessive.

Looking at the picture more broadly, the Gov appears to be taking a measure of revenge against those who's political positions it dislikes.

The lack of a preceding impact assessment suggests the decision was political as much as anything.

A high proportion of those effected are over 80 years old.

Older people tend not to vote Labour, a factor i suspect they did have chance to consider.

Imo, pandering to sectarian positions, or identity politics in this way, is ultimately counterproductive, undermining trust in the institutions that are universally relied on.

If this is to fund infrastructure improvements - not day to day spending, it may be advisable.

Whatever they think they are doing now makes no sense.

If the released prisoners re-offend, as they themselves suggest, any space created is going to be a short-term fix.
