A point that is oddly lacking by those posters who give their (guesstimates) of the higher price Mars will be tomorrow, next Friday, next month, even, in one extreme case, 2023 !
Sad as I am to see the shares struggle at present, but at least we are relieved, temporarily, of those who seem to think the moon is the limit without even thinking of the debt mountain which needs to be climbed first, notwithstanding the one item of real value being snapped up by an overseas buyer.
Pitcher & Piano royally failed to make its offer price, nor indeed any perceptible interest shown in it, yet that is/was surely worth rather more than the equivalent number of their pubs showing a severe lack of proper investment ?
But of course, the supermarkets are selling so much of our 40% owned product and are giving us shareholders such a generous price for it we will all do so well !
Doubtless these optimists will be back next time the shares go to 50 (65 by Friday, though which Friday is never mentioned), perhaps they don't realise Good Friday is when the market is closed !

When one their largest holders and early backer at about 79p sell their holding at 5p a couple of months ago it tells you something.
It tells you even more when that investor was Amati Global who specialise in Aim /micro stocks and they talk to all their investee companies weekly, at least. If they take a cut like that they must have good reason to.
I did post to that effect at the time.
However this board was over run by the "Twitterati" who each give 5 or 6 posts a day as if they are really interested, usually including links to some irrelevant piece of misinformation.
Read back a month or 2 and see what I mean, they certainly puffed a few people in by the activity in the stock at the time !

I did indeed sell some Amati vct today at 136p which I've held for just over 5 years so my 30% rebate on purchase was secured as was a wad of dividends, all tax free and the profit was almost £1 a share, totally tax free. Thermidor here we come !!!
Makes Merc' performance look pedestrian, and that is being v polite !

On the face of it what you say makes sense, however with debt the size of Marstons it might not be the intention of the board to have a rights, but they could well be forced to have one by their bankers.
It is as simple as that.

If they were the owners of Costa still I would be inclined to agree but didn't they sell them 2 years ago to Coke ?
So premier Inns, Brewers fare, Beefeaters are not too bad to compare the rump Marstons pubs with rooms/motel style lodges now the brewery is no longer in their control.
Where they do not compare to Marstons is their net debt figure though, hence they can buy bargains rather than have to sell them.
That was how I read the point that was being made.
Posters on here that think there is no need for a rights issue clearly have not bothered to look at the accounts too closely, imho.

You say "most people don't understand" re Merc, but perhaps more people understand than you think ?
For every decent covid stock (which are nascent) there are plenty of other lemons hence the 15% mark down in valuations re covid !

As usual you have hit the nail on the head, when I posted yesterday suggesting a rights issue was likely I did not go into detail with the numbers as I (clearly wrongly) assumed that fellow posters on the site were cogniscant of the MARS financial situation.
The responses to my post were somewhat surprising as there seem to be a significant number of investors here that invest on the basis "this has fallen a long way, bound to go back up soon" and take great umbrage at anyone who does not invest on that basis.
We live and learn eh ?

I agree, a very high chance of a rights issue.
With the brewery now majority owned by an overseas company what is left but a pile of debt and a string of pubs, some scruffy, some mediocre and some OK, but certainly not undervalued in the accounts.
What other choice is there ?

Any chance we could restrict this board to thoughts on MARS rather than scattergun predictions on everything from totally irrelevant stocks to inane predictions as to where the SP may or may not be in 2023, as if anyone knows where it will be end of 2020 ?

I am intrigued that you believe owning 40% only of the votes, having sold the other 60% means MARS have not given up 100% control ?
Do you remember Vodafone & Verizon perhaps ?
Verizon just refused to pay a dividend, forcing VOD to dispose of their holding & look at them now.....

So you think that by giving up 100% control of the brewery for a 40% stake that money, when it is paid, will be kept as cash ?

Do bare in mind that when going to a pub/hairdresser etc you have to give your contact details, which is not the case in supermarkets. That, I fancy, is the difference.
But having seen what a bunch of bedwetters the general public have become I would certainly not discount the "do-gooder" brigade making malicious phone calls to Plod re the punters in pubs.

A fair point but I was unaware of an upbeat sales forecast when they had their fundraise earlier this year, I thought the new raise was to facilitate extra sales ?
With the likes om Amati on the shareholding list now and with their experience in these very early stage companies I am sure the would have not invested without being comfortable with the likely prospects.

Have to say I am surprised at such a sharp drop on todays RNS which looked quite upbeat. Were investors looking for a contract announcement or could it just be the MM's playing games ?

"hope weather is good", if you look at the met office forecast for this weekend the drinkers in the garden/car park will need their macs on !!!
Perhaps someone should consider a switch from Marstons to Sta-dry if their forecast is accurate.....
