Very much late in the day, I wonder if Camra's objections carried any weight in this decision ? If so it is probably an own goal.
Nevertheless these things usually take months, which for Mars could be tricky even with their pubs now re-opened.
Not trying to be Mr Dismal but the SP has held up, (at present anyway), rather better than I thought it would after this news.
It does raise the prospect again of a bid for the whole company, but after Greene King yesterday I doubt we will have much chance of that in this post covid world.

Absolutely agree, as a customer they are easy to deal with & handle enquiries efficiently, & as an investor, rather rewarding.
Anyone any idea when the upcoming divi will be announced, this price is acting like someone knows something don't you think ?

Worth noting that todays Guardian is running a negative article on Spoons, long article, worth a read online just trying to stir up anti pub sentiment I suspect

I have to say that I, & I am sure most other posters on here, use this board to sensibly discuss whether Marstons are likely to be a good investment or not, so I was astonished to see the abuse aimed at you yesterday in a post that looked as if it had been written by triumph after too long in the sun & perhaps a pint too many ?
When the abuse is personalised, as it was in this case against you, it does nothing to increase our knowledge of the subject.
Let us hope we see more facts & opinions of the investment kind which in the past this board has been a great place to discover & discuss.

Yes this is indeed one of their better stocks which I'm pleased to say I had some in EIS' wrappers close to 3 years ago, known then as bio therapeutics. Sadly we do not know how much after this raise they are up. The amount they own though, at the higher levels as they rarely participate until a stock looks promising, is unlikely to make a huge difference to their nav, so I suggest it is chain store prosecco rather than magnums of Bolly on this news, but good to see anyway.

Share price is still soaring, more than doubled inside 3 months, amazing performance.

I'm in London Docklands and pubs here are much busier than I first feared, of course weather is a big factor. The killer though is with so many still home working that Canary Wharf restaurants/bars which should be packed solid are not and the area resembles a bit of a ghost town. There are signs of it picking up but with a Mayor who has mismanaged transport here so badly that is another factor holding things back.
I was on the Kent coast at weekend & you could not get near a hostelry, hopefully the same trends are developing in Marstons country, as London/South East their estate is quite sparse. Chairman of Youngs reported a similar pattern last week too.

What on earth makes you want to "buy in" ?

@daave To be fair with weather like it is at present we should be expecting record sales. I know it doesn't follow that we'll get them anyway, post covid, but if we were not seeing big sales now the question of pubs existence would surely be raised ? As it is your news is encouraging as it surely shows that people have missed the pub trips in the last few months & are hopefully getting back into the habit again.

@fairdealer Good stuff, setting the record straight there, mind you if our pubs had given birth after lockdown to create 800 more, then I guess our debt would have done the same to our balance sheet !

RI is definitel the only way PI's have a proper chance to participate without dilution, assuming they are prepared to participate, but with FT showing Friday's market cap at £289m it sounds like it would need to be more than a1 for 1 with shares at current level & in order for it to be at a discount large enough to tempt people in, so quite possibly a combo, as you suggest.

Agreed, indeed if my memory serves me right it was a placing to institutions that financed the Wells brewery acquisition, the PI's were excluded then.
Now if you look at the holding list there are very few insto's left in so it could be a RI out of needs, but it could also be precisely why Peels are now on board to sell the story to recovery funds etc.
It certainly is pleasant to meet someone, apart from a few old posters, who is not either claiming they will be £2 to £3 in a year or two , no justification ever given by the tw*tterati, or to hear what they bought to eat on the eat out help out scheme, especially on the privilege card.
Certainly does little to help discuss & decide on differing views re current problems, but I guess it keeps them happy so who am I to spoil their fun?

That is indeed my gut feel, the best deal for shareholders would be if the board could arrange debentures, unsecured loan stocks or the like against their estate as that would avoid dilution for the shareholders, but I fear due to their apparent aggressive valuations these are already fully utilised providing security to the banks to whom we are indebted. Another problem against raising cash using some of the estate as security is that there may well be agreements in the bank loan requiring any form of stronger security on a loan in the future having to be matched on existing loans outstanding.
So it seems likely that if a fundraise is in the offing it will be down to the shareholders alone to finance.

I see Peel Hunt have been appointed alongside JPM as joint broker with immediate effect, I wonder if this is merely window dressing or if some type of capital raising is being planned where Peel's would be more at home than JPM due to the current market cap ?

I agree, but let us hope the eat out help out scheme doesn't give them indigestion otherwise we might need to be investing in antacid producers ?
