Tricky, you've found a benefit of Brexit....more civil servants (many 10's of thousands) on Government pensions to advise us which forms we need to fill out to comply with EU law when we go to SPain or Portugal for our summer hols.
A job creation scheme to handle all the red tape!!!...I wonder how many of those jobs will be North of the Wall?

Why would any sane person be 'praying for a disaster'.??!!

A 'disaster' would mean trouble for them and their loved ones.

Sensible people could see issues with how the UK government was tackling the coronavirus. I don't believe many people 'prayed' that Boris & Cummings would mess things up....because IF (& when) they did it would put everyones elderly & vulnerable relatives at risk. Same with Brexit I suppose.
We pointed out the negatives, but the People made their choice and now we have to rely on Boris' Tory government (& future governments) to deliver on the promises that were made. We are all in the same boat (life raft!!).

Tricky, I have yet to be convinced that there will be any gains for UK from Brexit....but the People have spoken and time will tell.
But from what I can tell - at least in the short term - there are a long list of extremely expensive negatives to tackle. 'The' deal that they have 'apparently' negotiated is supposed to be quite thin but that was inevitable after Boris got a thumping majority. From a stock market point of view it would seem 'ANY' deal is better than 'No' deal (ooops again!!...Aussie deal). But I suspect over the coming months & years things will have to be reassessed by economists & investors on whether Brexit was a goose that laid a golden egg or a turkey.

£4 would seem to be the 'obvious' resistant level (not that I would know). I suppose any New Year paper recommendations - if TRMR were to be mentioned - could catapult us through that barrier. Results will obviously be the driver.....show us the money or jam!!

Looks to me like UK ministers & 'those in charge' in England (whoever they may be!!) looked over the edge of the abyss, saw the carnage (or is it TRUCKnage) around Dover and decided that a 'No' deal (ooops!!!...sorry, Australian deal) had the potential for being a massive vote loser.
Hopefully the 'grownups' have been allowed into the room, a deal will be signed and we can get on with our lives after more then 4 years of Brexit boredom.

About the only benefit of Brexit for me is that numpties like Liam Fox will forever be branded (possibly literally) as making the particularly inane statement "The easiet trade deal in history".

But then Dominic Raab (as Brexit Sextretary) almost 'trumped' it with "I hadn’t quite understood the full extent of this,....we are particularly reliant on the Dover-Calais crossing."

I sometimes wonder how they manage to get out of bed in the morning & who gets them dressed (shoelaces can be awfully tricky....ties too). Perhaps it was Dominic Cummings!!....no wonder he was so highly paid.

CurrlyKev, I'm not sure what you mean by 'increase the value of the company overall'?

After a merger or acquisition the combined company may or may not have enhanced profits (it would depend on the reasoning behind the merger/takeover). I was just pointing out that any shares released from treasury would have to be taken into account when working out EPS of the combined business.

I believe TRickyD was also talking about using the shares held in treasury to fund a dividend....doing so would cause the EPS to fall commensurately (IMO).

Presumable once the shares are taken out of treasury to be sold or used as payment for M&A activity, the EPS has to be adjusted....so that 'benefit' is lost.

Isn't it - assuming the SP will rise from an under-valued price - a form of leverage, whereby earnings are enhanced by suitably well chosen M&A activity? In an ideal world.

Buy-backs could also be viewed as an attempt to support the SP of struggling companies, who don't have any better way to spend their cash. It depends on whether the management trult believes the SP is under-valued. At £1.4 per share it was a simple 'Yes', at £3.4 the answer may not be as compelling, 'maybe'....perhaps!!

TRMR have quite a lot of shares in treasury - unless they have been utilised remunerating management I suppose - that are 'worth' a lot more at todays SP than they were purchased at.

The 'trick' is obviously to choose a M&A target that will compliment the current TRMR companies. A bad choice at this stage could undo all the 'good' work done so far. Almost nothing is worse than having a huge pile of cash that one is desperate to spend as quickly as possible....so easy to end up buying a pig in a poke.

Tricky, it depends what you mean (and what the scientific study conclusions were). The 'spread' of the virus within China - if one believes the official Chinese gov data - was profoundly curtailed. The spread of the virus internationally I would agree was 'modestly delayed' by internal Chinese actions.

One could argue that the spread internationally was due to the inaction of Western governments - delayed action in the 'hope' that the virus would fizzle out. Once it had leaked out of China - which was inevitable - the action (or inaction) of Western govs caused the perfect conditions for the Virus to spread.
The same will be the case for the 'new' UK variant....any travel bans will simply delay the 'New' variant from leaking out. Once in a country this 'new' variant will spread based on the effectiveness of the measures in place to stop transmission, which in the West has been non-optimal.
The best - and possible only - way out of the pandemic in the West are the Vaccines....assuming the anti-vax lobby don't win the argument and prevent enough people from having them!!!

Those EU types don't want to catch the new more contagious variant of the coronavirus....which appears to be centered around London and the SouthEast. It is why Boris 'Scrooge' Johnson cancelled Christmas!!

Trouble at borders - lorry queues at Dover I see - and countries around the World stopping visitors from UK because of this new variant of coronavirus. Hitting the FTSE.
I wonder if it will impact Christmas....or what is left of christmas!!

Weekend rules.

Brexit is done...we are where we is!!!
We just have to make the best of a bad deal.

To expect the EU to behave any differently in the way they are trying to protect the integrity of the single market seems a little odd....intelligent people who know how the EU works have been telling us for 4 years that they would behave exactly so. The integrity of the EU & the single markets Trumps all other issues.

We left the club....nobody forced us to leave. If we want access to the facilities of that club then we have to abide by the rules of that club...all the rules. If the rules change in the future - and it is their decision to change the rules, nothing to do with us - then the UK, as a sovereign power has the choice, to accept the new rule changes OR stop accessing the facilities of the club. Very simple....totoally understandable. It is our choice, our soveriegn choice....play by the EU rules or don't get access to EU markets.
Unfortunately that's how the big boys play in world politics....the big players have more clout & invariably get their way. The small, slightly irrelevant clubs - no matter how big & important they were in former halcyon days - have to play by the rules of the bigger teams.

Unfortunately the UK's political class & electorate may have misjudged our importance in the global scheme....Brexit is a huge experiment, possibly based on an outdated understanding of how the world currently works.
Perhaps in 3 years time - when the next UK election is due - we will have a better understanding of our place in the world. Perhaps Brexit will have delivered on the huge promises that were made. Perhaps people will feel happier, have better well paid jobs & think that sovereignty & 'getting back control' was a total unqualified success. Perhaps....
I know where I am going to place my money....I have started excavating a bunker & stockpiling foodstuffs.

Limiting the transition to a year and outlawing any extensions was 'probably' done to avoid getting into a never ending Bexit transition...it created a cliff edge to provide the negotiations a deadline.

However, to be so ill prepared for a 'No' deal is a national disgrace. It was always a possibility but the lack of planning that went into getting businesses & the ports ready is worrying to say the least.
But I suppose when we look at the fiasco of our pandemic handling we shouldn't be surprised.

It seems that Tory governments can only do one thing at a time....and that is usually done badly. I hate to think what would happen if we had to fight a real war. Dad's Army on steroids!!!!

Eddie, exactement!! We have managed to sleep walk into what looks like a 'No' deal.

It was 'interesting' last week how there was very little news on the Brexit deal, all the news outlets were concentraing on Covid and how it would impact Christmas. Very short sighted IMO.

It looks like the public are now resigned to getting a 'No' deal.....resigned but NOT prepared. I do hope people understand that the consequences could be very severe in the short to medium term.
