RE: Plenty going on9 Feb 2025 13:53
from the nov24 statement, phase 2 will include desktop and laboratory studies followed by a pilot injection scheme designed to achieve a monitoring and verification plan for carbon storage, allowing commercialisation of the project. following the results of the stage 2 studies, block and rustavi azot will work together to target the pilot injection of co2 into the reservoir in q1 2025.
the parallels are drawn to 44.01 in the united arab emirates where the pilot project, which completed in nov 24, managed to permanently mineralise 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide (co2) into peridotite rock formations in under 100 days.
in its first scale-up phase, the technology will be used to inject more than 300 tonnes of co2 over a longer period. block looks to inject 250,000,000 tonnes (over 800,000 times more).
as i have commented previously the 8.6 gt estimate depends more on the presence of zeolites in the rock. the potential storage appeats to have good permeability and porosity throughout, but needs to be confirmed as block do not know how ****geneous the mineralogy is and would be defined as the system is developed.
the difference with block is that the subsurface has a large volcanclastic formation full of zeolite minerals, which we have evidenced transformation into carbonate minerals within a few months in the presence of dissolved co2, but over a much slower period than 44.01.
currently [according to the release] block are targeting the co2 pilot injection phase. whether they announce results before end q1 or into q2 remains to be seen, but the cynical share awards being 4 months earlier than last year suggests news could be released before end q1.
the timeline started circa 26 november, so 125 days from start to end q1. whether they will achieve that is yet to be seen, but just over half way through now with 7 weeks to go. if the preliminary results are positive then expect a rise, hence the early share awards.
finally, 44.01 have secured $42m funding on 300 tonnes, block with substantially more storage could secure more and i hope they do. it all depends on credibility which sadly is missing in action.
