Hi Bkkk, I partly agree, except BT comes with too much regulation & other baggage.

You need to look at who Comcast are, they are all about cable company which is the exact opposite & mortal enemy of incumbent old state monopoly.

Big dept, quick thinking, deal doing fight for survival & market disruption is in Comcast’s DNA.

Oil and water in my opinion. Them buying Sky was a streak of genius, they would have paid any price. The only question is what are they going to do with it. I think the next thing they do will tell us a lot. That might MLB’s nothing of course, but I doubt it, their attitude towards the SKY acquisition suggests more to come. As Fleccy says, it’s all speculation.

There’s no smoke without fire Fleccy - I suspect the time is not right for Virgin, rather than SKY not wanting it.

Will have to wait until they negotiate again, the pitch might change shape next time round when Comcast get more and more influence.

My guess is they will start negotiation again around 2024? - lets not forget sky mobile is over O2.

NDN - You’re saying never using BT. I’ve constantly said use A cable network as first choice. If liberty do cable the rest of the country then the foot print get bigger. There’s already 17m premises cabled.

It’s legitimate speculation . When SKY resign a long term wholesale Deal with openreach that will stop me speculating.

Other companies are already building networks without using BT ducts or poles, I see no reason why they would start, in my opinion. Much of this is happening because of unfriendly histories with BT.

I see a future where all these other companies combine their builds, brought together by a Big Player... which is where I get Comcast from. Same way as cable consolidation happened in the 2000’s

This future could also include reduced red tape for planning and permission, this is something already under discussion.

The future could also include restrictions on BT openreach again like the 90’s to encourage competition, this could also come as part of a US / U.K. trade deal (again Comcast)

I keep looking, but I’ve not seen anything in the press about SKY signing a long term wholesale deal with Openreach, this must be a year overdue now?

Personally my guess is SKY accessing Virgin’s network on wholesale basis will be more about cable operator not wanting the competition. If this is the main block (I suspect it is) then this will only be overcome if a If big player can convince everyone concerned there’s a long term plan & is in everyone’s interest (again where I get Comcast)

This path is the only one I can see where openreach will see a proper challenge come from, I can’t see anything else that would truly compete

NDN - I almost don’t know where to begin. I think the discussion has already been had regarding other companies building network in economical areas & leaving BT to rural unpopulated areas. You change your tune to serve your self again. Virgin are currently capable of delivering 1Gbts broadband to circa 17m premises. Would you like to detail how many BT premises can match that, then explain whose behind please? & lastly I just covered the point about Telefonica and John malone moving on & it (probably) has nothing to do with O2 or VM being good or bad business. I don’t think I’ve ever come across such uninformed arrogance. Well done for be world beating.

PS. I am still of the opinion SKY (Comcast) will throw their Lott into this new business rather than carrying on relying on BT wholesale....... bearing in mind Comcast are a cable company, there are all kinds of technical and psychological reasons why I think this makes sense to them. Personally 20 years down the line I can see Comcast controlling the lot.... if they have a mind to.

Nigeco - I wouldn’t read anything into these competition checks. Would expect this for any deal, no different for the BT / EE tie up, there’s little chance this will be anything other than process.

John malone has been fiddling in Europe for years, but has always wanted back in to the American market, he has previous for constantly doing deals. Pulling out of Europe selling to Vodafone is very inline with his deal making, him wanting or considering offloading Vm is just more of the sane but he’ll only do it if the price / situation is right. Telefonica has wanted out of O2 for years, practically begged Bt to choose them rather than EE... they have dept & other interests overseas they are concentrating on. Personally I would have bet the merger was going to be U.K. Vodafone and virgin media...... still might of course. Either way an O2 VM tie up will be quite a business. People love O2 as a brand, I think by customer number they are biggest in U.K. now, they do Tesco mobile (which is surprisingly big & now have good spectrum. Yes debt, but these business will make good use of it
