This might have as much to do with viewing figures than anything else & realisation uefa may be reluctant to sell rights to smaller audiences? If that’s the case ITV might be a good partner. But I hate the fact Liberty own a large portion of ITV & that John Malone / Virgin media have made secret itv is something they want to own. Iftbus is about money, then Amazon, Disney would be obvious options, I think Bt sport productions are excellent, based on this they should produce content for other tv options
That not very nice lil Rod. I could see fleccy’s misinformation has already confused you into thinking your internet adventures were safe. I thought you would like to know how easy it is to identify your deeds? So you can proceed with caution
Again not true. Virtually everything sell on here as your expertise is not correct.
It’s not a major investigation at all, what you describe is a tech giants business model.
& initially you claimed (backed up by promoting your expertise) that a MAC address or unique identifier never leaves layer 2 or that a vpn services & or encryption would protect you anyway
Neither of these are true. & it’s important
It’s also very important to use your technical expertise to explain to people that having a device which has been hacked and modified by tech criminals & then plugging it into to your “trusted side” of a home network for free content is madness!!? It’s equivalent of leaving all your doors and windows open, whist advertising this fact on prison TV.... absolute madness.
Fleccy - sip is an example of a Layer 4 registering a device. I used SIP because you are such a telecoms expert so you will be familiar there are other examples
The act of registration is one method which can be used to exchange unique identifiers example give is MAC, manufacturer, model, version etc
Because it’s an application, transport layer is irrelevant IP Ethernet whatever. It also means no amount of encryption or VPN protection will prevent this information being exchanged
Device registration happens before username : password , for sip it identifies location for other applications it’s for unique devices,(see Netflix, Amazon, backing etc trusted devices)
Once you have Mac or unique identifier, you have purchase / warranty details & can cross reference other sites similar to advertising agencies / tech companies do
Just like to repeat, vpn or encryption does not provide any protection (I love that bit)
Luckily I don’t know as much as you do, I just read a lot.
I thought so. Liberty have a 10 or 11% share of ITV
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-4497452/amp/Why-media-tycoon-Liberty-eyes-ITV.html
Larry - ITV. That could get interesting in 2 ways, would love to see football back on terrestrial tv (but never liked itv pundits) but secondly, I think Liberty Media used to have a big stake in ITV?
NDN & Fleccy
Obviously I don’t know as much as you guys. I think you term yourselves as voice experts, so the example that helps you here is for SIP registration. But can assure you other examples of layer 4 (application layer) registrations happen in similar way, Netflix, banking, etc. It’s one method there are others. Anyway, voice example of MAC address being passed between 2 clients over layer 3 = IP
I’m sure as this is your area of expertise, you know far more than I do. Please note the exchange of manufacturer, version & MAC address
The message above is a typical REGISTER message. Let’s get familiar with the most important Headers:
REGISTER – the method being used
CSeq: incremental counter of the session
Via: indicates the route taken by a request
and the rport indcates the SIP server to use the received port to reply, while the port indicated in the message as NAT / PAT might be working in the middle
User-Agent: indicates the SIP Client connecting; most devices will indicate here the manufacturer – product name – software version and other information, such as the MAC address
Does this mean maker thinks Bt stand to do a deal worth circa £400mln?
Honestly that seems quite low valuation for BT sport or for a worthwhile portion of Bt sport ?
Or not. Reading articles, when Bt sport managed to get control of european football, it virtually stopped customers leaving for sky. I see that as hidden value
No most of that’s not right either Fleccy, starting to wonder if you’re just a user of technology / technician , rather than an engineer?
So one minute according to you “Mac stays in L2 “ & now you are identifying how important it is to mask it. Make your mind up, sounds like the kind of confusion that happens when you don’t really understand.
It’s virtually impossible to remain anonymous, the biggest and best method of doing that is discipline. Not technology
Glad we’ve established MAC address will give you away at L4. It’s also v. Obvious if it’s cloned & doing it in software doesn’t do it if the chipset in your “unique” interface still has it hard coded!!!!! The effort needed to hide this sticks out a mile. (Someone who knows these things, told me). & you need to do it on every device with a “unique” interface. (Good luck on your phone!!)
Obviously I know nothing about technology. I just read a lot.
Well,if it turns out BT sport end up doing sport productions for Disney/Amazon I would see this as a good thing. Devil in detail as always. I see BT sport as a really high quality production, I remember the studios they bought around Olympic village.
lil rod. You might want to look at this
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/thousands-kodi-iptv-users-sent-18943275.amp
Fleccy - application layer requests MAC address......
Boom identity of that machine has just been passed end to end..... like I said VPN only protects in-between. At either end is an application.
Lil rod, I don’t want you to get into trouble with the vice squad. Go buy yourself a vpn account. Log into Netflix or your bank. Go look at registered devices & then wonder how they recognise your device & list every other device you use. Then wonder how they know all this, when you’ve never told them......? (Other posts explain how)
Healy I don’t think people breaking the law & stealing content is a reason to plan a business model.
Illegal content can be closed down & people do get prosecuted for it (I had a job doing that). & as I’ve already said & don’t take this the wrong way, but a vpn does not protect your privacy between both ends, only in-between. Your computers unique identification can we requested & then used to track you down from other sites.... I bet your online banking recognised your device long before you add account details, as would Netflix & anyone else, they will even cross reference the I’d & tell you the make and model of the device !!
Sure lil Rod, there could be fewer. That is another outcome. That’s certainly not the current direction of travel.
Essentially I’ve just described what has been happening in the U.K. telecoms market. My point is what’s happening to BT’s income? According to your idea of “network is king” BT should be seeing income growing.....
Pete, I think you are missing the point. BT has 1000 customers, all paying retail prices for services. Say £50-70 per month
Along comes another option, for which BT only gets wholesale pricing for, whether this is another bb provider or even worse a wholesale fibre to a mobile mast, BT’s income is dramatically reduced.
Fleccy is saying local loop unbundling etc happened & “BT’s still here” the answer is yes, but BT is diminished as a consequence, it’s a fraction of what it should be if local loop unbundling & wholesale line rental never happened.
I’m not saying any of this will remove Bt from the market, I’m saying these this diminish BT further. BT sport was an option to help fill this gap.
Satellite BB, 5G, other fibre providers, mobile operators able to offer reliable home bb options all takeaway retail income, which “network is king” wholesale doesn’t replace. I suspect the “network is king” train of thought will become much more competitive over next 10 years. Vodafone replaced BT fibre backhaul where they could, O2 will do the same & this March won’t slow down. So I would like to see BT find other income streams.
