Haha if you say so. To an analyst it’s still looks like delivering groceries from a manufacturer to a wholesaler to a customer to me. But you clearly know there’s much more to it than that. Haven’t seen any driverless vans yet though. They are still driven by drivers who move job every few months looking for a few extra pounds per hour. Unlike Tim.

Their website says and I quote “We are not governed by rules......” whilst I applaud the sentiment for start-ups and micro companies and for backing entrepreneurs. For large listed vehicles I’m not so sure.

I agree with you but I just have to wonder how two blokes from the City of London wander into California with its 150 year old oil business and snaffle so much “value” from right under the noses of thousands and thousands of US oil & gas investors, companies, promoters etc. They wouldn’t have been the first guys to see these prospects that’s for sure. Maybe they were just the smartest? I’m certainly a fan of what they are trying to do. GLA

Are we ever going to drill?. Wick “should” be an easy to approve North Sea well, but on the other one I worry about drilling in an AoONB to be honest.

I wonder what the total cost is every year of the Aviva Board of Executive and non executive directors? Combined executive Salaries, pension contributions, employment benefits, cost of chauffeurs, cost of travelling to & from board meetings, overnight accommodation for board meetings, NED fees, stationary, secretary costs, fancy board room refurb and rental costs etc etc etc.
It must be many millions of pounds. I for one shareholder do not think we receive anything like value for money. Personally I would like to see the Chairman walk ASAP with no pay-off and someone appointed as Chairman/CEO to get this thing back on track or broken up & sold. Frankly someone who will focus one one thing only; maximising shareholder value. Novel concept I know but sorely missing in these big mammoth beasts. Run by “City” types :(

Just quietly read through the 2017 annual report, AGM statement and the recent interim accounts this morning. They reminded me of my late mother in law saying to me regularly “fine words butter no parsnips”. However this company are not alone in that regard!!
However analysing this thing right down to the base level of each leased restaurant/cafe site they are or were “valued” according to their share price anyway around £2m each. I ask myself would I have paid £2million (if I had it) for one of these sites? I suppose we will find out fairly soon if anyone else thinks they are worth that amount!!
I sure hope they can save something from this....

Agreed Pokerchips but they can’t move their hospitals or make them smaller! They’ve actually signed up with their landlords in the lease to invest millions of £s in them every year as well as pay an ever increasing rent for 30 years! I don’t know but I suspect that the previous PE owners (Cinven) would probably have sold and leased back the better & more profitable Spire hospitals. So at least they have the freehold ownership of the others to sell and begin to tackle the £500million of bank debt they currently have on their balance sheet.
I’m afraid it’s a “sell” with a hope that Mediclinic will bid to avoid a complete write off of their initial massive investment!!

But there is a reason that these “discoveries”have sat for decades and not been developed. For the life of me I can’t figure out why that is....

The trading statement reads “during the course of the 9th of October”. Is that a euphemism for the Longest Day?
How can a company suddenly discover a £20m black hole “during the course of 9th of October”?
Management, board, bankers, auditors, accounting dept & NOMAD and nobody noticed £20m was missing?
Beggars belief and I’m afraid doesn’t look good for AIM or for Corp Governance (boring stuff I know) generally in the U.K.
Will Mr Johnston have time for his regular (and informative) article in the Sunday Times this week I wonder?
I hope it all gets resolved quickly and that small shareholders are looked after.

Sadly the market has changed dramatically in the last couple of years. The change to mainly outpatient treatments, keyhole surgery and short stay has left all the hospital groups with too many empty beds and expensive real estate to finance and maintain. BMI just announced a £65m annual rent reduction plus an equity injection. Ramsay written down their U.K. hospital portfolio as well. The NHS squeeze is part of Govt cost cutting not much to do about that except wait, Insurance been under long term downward pressure thanks in part to big increases in insurance tax! Lovely govt again messing in pvt sector healthcare. Private paid treatments are mainly a London and south east phenomenon so unlikely to be the magic bullet for Spire tbh. Plus private pay is a very small part of Spire’s revenue anyway. Sorry all of this was just to say that I believe ANY decent bid by the major shareholder will be accepted by the Board this time around!

Ahem. The “Board” were ALL in place when the +300p Mediclinic bid was rebuffed. The “Board” have all been around a fairly long time and the bloke who sold this baby to the Public Markets from Cinven still sits on the Board for some unknown reason. Brand new FD and a new position COO tbh won’t get much say in whether any bid is accepted or not.
Long look at themselves required IMHO, especially the Chairman.

😂 this is one of 5 yes 5 Boards he sits on currently. He turned down a bid in 2008 for Friends Provident as Chair and eventually sold it in 2009 at less than half the original offer price! Career lawyer now 70 years young, perfect for the fight. His tenure as chairman of Aviva matches that of the CEO!! Nuff said.

Not a chance in hell of a cash takeover. Merger with a “rival” perhaps. As someone said on here earlier these animals are merger beasts, and without a CEO fewer “social issues” on a merger!
I have just seen that the CEO is off with £6.5million after achieving WHAT? Exactly? A reduction in the share price during 6 years of raging bull markets and historically low interest rates!!! Sometimes I despair of corporate Britain.

Tbh after reading the RNS again, it looks like the CEO had run out of ideas. He clearly thinks he is a “turnaround guy” so perhaps A) he should have gone much earlier B) why was an external successor not already lined up by the Board?

I’m more concerned why a multi multi billion pound company that’s one of the “bedrock” shares and employers of this country can be so disorganised they haven’t even prepared (or bothered?) with any CEO succession planning!! Ridiculous for a hugely complex beast like Aviva to be “run” by a NED (lawyer I think?) while shareholders and policyholders sit & wait for someone’s name to be picked out of the hat. Board need clearing out too.

You tweaked my interest by congratulating the new guy for his share purchase so I read the RemCo report and tried to reconcile it with the P&L. Couldn’t, but then again when have profits and dividends ever been a measure of a company’s value and success. Surely it’s the number of software engineers hired in India :)) only kidding.
Seems Luke had to hold a minimum number of shares to get on the LT incentive scheme. That’s how it appears anyway.
£1m profit generated but paid out £9m in share bonuses to their Exec! Nice but sustainable?
Cash is running a little low and with little cash generated and huge investment plans where does the new cash come from? Not from banks or bond holders because these guys do need profit and actual free cash flow! So it will come from you guys I guess...or maybe Tim reinvests? DYOR please.

agreed at c150,000 dollars per day they want everything lined up before taking the rig on contract!
Crew, equipment, helicopters, support vessels, approvals, permits, chemicals etc etc etc. No easy (or cheap) business this digging lark!!!
