RE: Fair SP holder value ?14 Feb 2021 20:56
James - it is not difficult for market makers to control the price for more than 1 month, 2 months, whatever. They control the price ALL the time. Only when there is irresistible buying pressure from traders do they take the opportunity to allow the price to move up. The MMs sell short into this and simply wait as long as they need to to get back the shares they need. The only question is after this process does the SP end up higher than it started out at or not.
Ironically if others know that this is what the MMs are doing, and they too sell short at the peak prices (aka selling into a price rise) then it becomes a competition between the MMs and the price risers as to who buys back first. If it is the MMs then the price risers could lose out as the price potentially moves back up, however if the price risers continue to buy after the walk back the MMs end up having to deal with not just the initial buying pressure but also the subsequent buy back pressure. In the second scenario the MMs then will move the price even lower to try and skewer those who might have bought using leverage.
This is what happens in a zero sum game when you are playing against a banker who has the rules bent in their favour.
