ukmoe - it is possible to interpret what you wrote as "lets give a little bit of money to those poor struggling battery techs that cannot get installed" - I am sure that you do not mean this to be the understanding - the actual reason is that they appreciate that this is a failure of the market to work in such a way as to encourage long-term technology development. To be precise it is a failure of their inability to create market mechanisms that appropriately reimburses long-duration energy shifting by the UK electricity system - a bit like the electricity system in Texas not being market incentivised to make sure their power plants work in cold weather.

As an aside I am delighted to see that part of this funding is being handled via the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) - this is a scheme that claims to be modelled on the US's SBIR program that has been running for decades. About 15 years ago I was involved with David Connell of the Cambridge Judge Institute in this scheme at its early stages ( https://www.cbr.cam.ac.uk/fileadmin/user_upload/centre-for-business-research/downloads/special-reports/specialreport-secretsseedcapitalfund.pdf ) - we had discovered that some research councils were fully behind the scheme, actively handing grants to small businesses, whilst others who will remain nameless were deliberately blocking small businesses from receiving them.

As the founder of a research led small business at the time I was somewhat annoyed by this so ended up phoning the cabinet office to ask why this was happening. In that call I was explicitly told that 'businesses do not do research' - as a result of this call I then started an online project called SBRIwatch which was devoted to tracking down where all the supposed SBRI research money was going. The civil servants really did not like that I can tell you.

To cut a long story short it turned out 'SBRI' was a box on a form that a civil servant could tick - so we ended up finding a long list of spurious bull**** 'Small Business Research Initiative' grants that ranged from mystery shopper exercises to retiling a swimming pool - very few encouraged any real research or innovation by UK businesses.

gambit - I think you could well be right. There will come a day in the next 5 years when a major energy or infrastructure company such as Shell, EDF or Siemens will come knocking at Bushveld's door and then the only question will be how many pounds per share are they going to have to pay.

Metatron - Crux is not in the same position as the Market Makers, in that he does not set the prices, though his author may still be wishing to attempt to influence the market. They are not doing this out of charity so are perhaps looking to talk up their own book or, by a not so subtle dig at Afritin, try and get a cheaper buy in price here.
