Facts are limited, so is news; I suppose the rest is chat. It ends up as confrontational between different peoples personal values and how much you can be bothered to respond to the lies, mistruths and spin that a few peddle here. I still appreciate the posters who are well informed, plus a few that are funny. The rest is background noise. It doesn't seem that hard to see who is who.

This suggests it was a more even split - "between 1947 and 1994, some 950 mines were closed by UK governments" approx 50/50, Tories a nose ahead until Major finished it. I wasn't counting in the 70's, I just remember Police sent in by Thatcher to break strikes.

I grew up in the 70s and agree with that. One of the things I have thought more about as I got older is how close that really was to the end of the war, like 1997 is from now. A better idea of how short twenty five years actually is.
Totally disagree about Thatcher and cant let the "its what the country needed" argument go. I don't think we can reconcile that as in my view the woman was an abomination.

I think you absolutely nailed it there. No way around that particular dilemma for those left who haven't already made a more sudden exit. A question of which fails first, body or mind.

No, not quite like that. Agree there are other causes Plato. But reducing fossil fuel usage is necessary to mitigate the worst of what is to come. I am not for demonising oil companies either (have a few shares in Shell) because they are key players in the energy transition and also need to supply lesser amounts to future generations. Its not all about us is it?

It's an attitude shared by a few here. (If I cant see it, then it doesn't exist).
I agree that no-one knows the future and there will be many things that occur that are unforeseen.
But denying the threat of impending famine and mass migration seems short sighted to me. We shouldn't let the things we cant do stop us from doing the things we can.
