Personally I don't see this explained as a proxy war. I believe Ukraine would fight if they had no help and their fate held no consequence for larger global powers. Just calling it a proxy war is a bit insulting to Ukrainians in my view, as they have their own interest to defend and fight back.

As best I understand it, if Ukraine lose they get their country levelled and become part of Russia. If Ukraine win they get their country levelled and are able to call themselves Ukraine and experience the biggest building boom in Europe since Berlin. Big difference between those two situations? Look at Velenskiy already courting IT firms for his vision of a fully digitised democracy.

1807 is not that many generations back and it was the end of 145 years of exploitation that saw three million people forcibly taken to the Caribbean and enslaved in plantations. Evidence of this survives and we can see the consequences.
I expect theres a fair chance we both have a bit of Roman and Viking ancestry mixed up in our DNA. Do you really think that gives us grounds for a similar claim?

I think it's because of the degree of prejudicial treatment that black people still receive. It is identifiable and current in a way that is harder to detect for many other people who also suffered wrongs in history. But it seems right to me that the holocaust was addressed in a way that included reparations. UK has its own share of responsibility for slavery that it must answer. It is not the only share.

I find it hard to reconcile your attitude towards immigration with your strong vocal support for BLM. Also I am not sure if your views extend to every business with historical links to slavery being cancelled, as that is rather a simplistic view of settling the argument for reparations. More importantly it doesn't at all address the need for everyone to consider what it is like to be a person of colour in today's world. Arguably, the Guardian now plays a more constructive part in journalistic reporting that enables that conversation, instead of suppressing it.
