newuncle, I am fully behind Deepverge, there's great opportunitie however re: the rivers, and sewage releases in general. The problem is not a technical one, the problem seems to be one of willingness to do the right thing. Every story that you read through regarding a release indicates that it was conscious decision to ignore alarms etc. and allow it to happen.
The only way that this tech can help is by making the alerting system either open or cheap enough that the regulator gets the information at the same time as the potential releaser, AND the regulator acts. So the regulator notices it, has a hotline to whomever it concerns, says i need to see this improving in the next n hours or else it's £10m for every 10mins, and they watch it improve or not. Currently the regulator is blind to all but the largest releases, and always it's very old information, so they can do better with better information, but will they?

Howzaty, agree, this has opened the way for future other tests, I can see doctors surgeries with a cupboard of tests for a variety of ailments that currently require sending samples away, consuming 2 or more appointments.
