Banks are leading the way lower as investors feel the waves of worry over the ongoing Greek talks and the impact of the downgrades on three French banks. Lloyds became the biggest faller after losing more than 5%, closely followed by RBS and Barclays. Shares in the latter have taken a hit from a note out of Exane BNP to the effect that its BarCap investment banking arm will require significant restructuring.Other financial stocks are not faring much better with Ashmore and Hargreaves Lansdown out of favour after RBS analysts downgraded their ratings on both stocks. Cairn Energy was also heading south after withdrawing its proposal to give its non-executive Chairman, Sir Bill Gammell, share options worth £2.5m after institutional shareholders opposed the move. Meanwhile, so-called defensive stocks were very much in demand with utilities firms International Power, National Grid and SSE among the highest risers. Weir is in the top spot, helped by a reiteration from Goldman Sachs of the stock's buy rating. The stock was also rebounding from being the worst performer yesterday after suffering a downgrade by JP Morgan Cazenove.Glencore is also trading down; the mining giant is refusing to comment on reports that Italy's industry ministry has confirmed Glencore's intention to evaluate the possible industrial and market prospects of an Alcoa Inc plant in the country.
