A test drilling site for shale gas. Dart Energy is expected to begin drilling at the former Royal Ordnance Factory Ranskill, Nottinghamshire. Photograph: Ashley Cooper/Global Warming Images/Alamy A leading fracking firm is to start drilling on the former site of a huge explosive factory, in a decision described as "beyond comprehension" by the local MP. Dart Energy, which is expected to begin drilling this weekend, says the site is "absolutely" safe. But opponents say there is a risk of unexploded bombs and that safety tests have not yet been completed. The revelations add to concerns about the regulation of "unconventional" gas exploration in the UK, which has seen deformed wells go unreported, planning rules breached and trespassing. The 500-acre Royal Ordnance Factory Ranskill, near Daneshill Lakes in Nottinghamshire, was one of three built to produce cordite during world war two. Another explosive, RDX, was produced after the war and the site was broken up in 1975 and is now mostly woodland and farmland. The original planning statement submitted for work on the site claimed "there are no recorded past workings on the site". Dart Energy, which is working with oil giant Total to exploit shale gas reserves elsewhere in the UK, says it does not intend to frack at the Daneshill site but wants to use another unconventional technique to extract gas from coal deposits. "It is beyond comprehension that you would chose a former ordnance site for your first drilling site," said John Mann, Labour MP for Bassetlaw. He told the Guardian: "There needs to be a proper investigation of the risks of drilling on the munitions site and that has not been done. All the authorities are passing the buck on this." The presence of the former explosives factory was raised with Nottinghamshire council and the Environment Agency by local people. Chris Crean, Friends of the Earth Midlands campaigner, said: "David Cameron and his fracking pals keep telling us that the UK's regulatory framework means fracking and other extreme energy developments won't harm people or the environment. But this fiasco makes it clear that it's not as safe as they want us to believe. It suggests serious weaknesses in the regulatory regime when the authorities are relying on local residents to identify the issues they should be investigating." An Environment Agency (EA) technical report on the contamination of Ministry of Defence (MoD) land states: "As most MoD sites that operated during the war were military targets, there is often an issue of unexploded ordnance." It also notes recordkeeping was often poor in wartime. A spokesman for the EA said Dart held all the permits it needed, but added: "We have requested soil samples to provide conclusive proof that there are no residual explosives on site." Crean said: "We think it's irresponsible for Dart to start to drill before they an

Thanks Ken! I did read it and was a little disappointed with the reference to income from PEDL133 in 2016. I always thought they were 9 months from production once they receive approval. From what I take from the Inquiry it looks as though approval will happen, it is just a matter of the conditions. A 2km buffer zone will effect the proposal. What may bring the delay is the need for baseline data before they start production. Part of me is disappointed but as long as income is within 2 yrs I can wait. On another note very happy with the level of activity DTE are involved with at present, there should be plenty of data coming through in the 3rd and 4th qtr this calendar year.
Seems Dart are on a 4week drill.... they must just be taking the CBM as BARTON ( IGAS ) took ages I know they had the protestors however the SHALE well at Barton is at least double the depth.... Best ask ADDOUBLE over on IGAS BB, he will know

wonder how many manorial rights she has registered?? The Crown Estate and shale gas: the facts Recent policy changes regarding the method of shale gas extraction known as 'fracking' has led to widespread public interest in the matter. In particular, driven by stories from the United States of the income that land owners have received from permitting fracking on their land, land owners and media outlets have examined the nature of UK land rights and the potential allocation of profits from the process in this country. There is a distinct contrast between land rights in the UK and the US in that an American citizen has full rights to all the minerals beneath the surface of their land. In the UK, under the Petroleum Act 1998, 'The Crown' retains all sub-surface rights to hydrocarbons, such as Shale Gas; so landowners will not benefit directly from the oil or gas found underneath their property. In the context of shale gas and as with North Sea oil and gas, the rights of 'The Crown' are managed by the Secretary of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Change who, on behalf of Her Majesty, grants licences for hydrocarbon extraction. The Crown Estate does not have a role in Shale Gas extraction and is no different from any other landowner in the UK in this respect. It is important to recognise the difference between the "The Crown" as a concept, and "The Crown Estate" as an organisation. The Crown Estate is an £8 billion asset management business tasked by Parliament with managing a diverse portfolio of assets commercially and paying all profits to the Treasury. This portfolio includes the UK seabed, London's Regent Street and much of St James's, together with one of the nation's largest rural estates. It does not include any hydrocarbon rights.
Natural gas storage Fluctuations in supply and seasonal demand have created a need for natural gas storage in the UK. We manage the UK seabed out to the 12 nautical mile territorial sea limit and, under the 2008 Energy Act, hold the rights for gas storage within the Gas Importation and Storage Zone (GISZ), which extends out to the continental shelf.
What we do From sand and gravel to gold and silver, we license mineral extraction and mining. The total area where we own the rights to extract minerals covers some 115,500 hectares (285,500 acres), but the large majority of this is not actively worked. Actual operations include 34 lettings, extracting sand, gravel, limestone, granite, brick clay, coal, slate and dimension stone - providing the building blocks of our everyday lives, from the roads we drive on to the offices and homes we inhabit. Since 1994, we have treated 300 mine entrances or workings and 90 abandoned quarries to make them safe and restore the natural habitats as far as possible. We encourage and assist our tenants to maintain the highest working practices. To this end a traffic reduction tunnel has been constructed between two quarries in Gloucestershire. A successful underground extraction trial resulted in planning permission being obtained for a full scale operation which is ongoing at a quarry on the Isle of Portland as well as the extension of a facility to produce secondary aggregate from slate waste in Wales.
She owns an amazing amount of land Just an amazing amount of research for us Apart from our current minerals portfolio, we hold the mineral rights to various areas, covering some 80 manors, largely in north Wales. This title is of a historic nature and in most cases derives from reservations to the Crown under the Inclosure Awards and Acts of the early 19th century. Because of its historic nature, most of this title had not previously been registered and was protected as an 'over-riding interest'. However, under the Land Registration Act 2002, this protection is removed from October 2013, and owners of mineral rights which are 'manorial' are obliged to register their mineral interest if it is to be protected beyond this statutory deadline. Consequently, The Crown Estate along with many other land owners, are embarking upon a programme to register their existing mineral rights. The process includes an application to The Land Registry to register the minerals providing evidence of title. The Land Registry, which is a separate and distinct organisation from The Crown Estate, will write to the surface title owner to inform them of the application. We recognise that surface owners may not realise that they don't own the mineral rights beneath their property, and the notice may come as a surprise. If you have received such a notice from the Land Registry, you may have some questions, so we have provided some answers to those questions we have received to date.
Today's Times reports that forthcoming Queens Speech will include legislative proposal that horiz drilling will no longer be regarded as trespass.
