Wow, I joined the BB to discuss shares and investment, we have ended up arguing about heat pumps. Given the advanced age of some here, shall we also introduce the subject of adult diapers, which might be relevant sooner than a SOLG takeover? I can share a link to get started! https://www.parentgiving.com/blogs/everything-incontinence/best-adult-diapers
Hello StukeyBlue I have air to air.
Understand your frustration with cooling.
My air to air pump can reverse and provide cooling as well as heat.
Quady doesn't your system having a secondary coil, sort of prove pactrols point.
You really come across as not to bright
Pactrol that's just daft.
Tell me do you turn off your heating when it's cold outside.
What would be the point of having heating.
Must be fun at your house during the winter months.
As an engineer don't you think you should at least visit a friend of yours that has an heat pump.
Maybe find out a bit about them and don't believe the conspiracy theories.
Heat pumps. I live in Ireland and have air to water heat pump.Fantastic (apart from noise occasionally from water pump-working on solving this currently). The reason is the amount of insulation in the house (new when I bought it) - It is an average of 6" all round. The heating hasn't been switched on since end of March. The problem is in summer when more than warm, last week the temp in my house upstairs was 25 degrees. There ought to be a cooling system with them for summer use
Try turning off the immersion heaters when its freezing outside then tell me how warm you are Haha
Pactrol that's just not true. First of all you have your radiators changed when you have a heat pump, they have a slightly larger surface area, so heat more efficiently in the winter.
Next the hot water, has a secondary coil in it and has to be heat pump compatible this tops up any deficit.
They work incredibly well in cold weather, but use more electric.
So don't believe the rubbish you hear on heat pumps.
I no longer have gas in the house as I also had a gas hob but changed it for an induction hob.
With the rise in my electricity bill and no longer having gas, I am saving about £2,500 a year and am warmer.
And now for something completely different...where Ingo went...

Quady really heatpumps work realy well when its warm. but when its cold their efficency fall off dramatically so much so that you have to have energy guzzling immersion heaters to get the water upto temperature. so when its freezing outside your heatpump will be struggling to break even in running cost and thats if its very efficient.
RK, my next door neighbour is a nuclear physicist who has spent his entire working life on nuclear fusion. He explained it to me once - I understood one word in ten - but the long and the short of it is we are still a way off achieving anything like a practical solution, but, it will definitely happen. In his working life he's seen it go from a theory to actually seeing it happen, and with some justification he's proud of the work the UK has done. The race to provide a working solution is between us, the USA, Germany and France. He says we and the Germans are closer and the French are barking up the wrong tree - for a change.
Rednight yes I agree infact so do JCB . we just need to convert all these wind farms we are paying to keep turned off as the crid can,t cope. into Hydrogen generators. job sorted
Pactrol I also have an engineering background, I also have an advantage over you.
I have a heat pump.
They have to be one metre from each neighbours wall.
They make a small noise, but it's quieter than a gas boiler.
You have to listen really carefully to hear it and even then you need to get really close to it.
Apart from producing 3 KW of heat for every KW of electricity.
It has another advantage no one talks about.
That is you have mains pressure on your hot water.
They are great, also Octopus energy have great deals on heat pumps at the moment.
As a government incentive they make a loss on every one they install.
I don't think you will find a better deal.
Pactrol...the solution is green hydrogen...byproduct water...
Can already be mixed with methane to run in domestic boilers...
Small green hydrogen powered charging points
Buses already running on green hydrogen...
SDY going onto partnership with AFC to build small generators...
Once upon a time wind power was prohibitively expensive, now it is a sgtaple and one of the cheapest...
Green hydrogen is the future...plus nuclear fusion...
But you still have the problem of finite lithium, copper, cobalt, nickel and especially REMs...
PS every soldered joint has tin in it...DYOR...
Oh dear have I upset the Apple cart I will go glue myself to the road to make amends Haha
Pactrol, good grief, man! What's wrong with you?! Practicality must NEVER get in the way of ideology.
I totally agree this green idea is total fantasy as without exception all these so called green technologies rely on oil to either manufacture or make them work . as with the electric cars all it does is produce the pollution elsewhere in the manufacturing & disposal . threes nothing green about it.
As an engineer with knowledge of how these things work and all the mechanical moving parts involved. I would oft for a gas boiler every time has anyone considered the racket that will be generated when you get whole streets of these dam things rattling away the fan noise alone will be horrendous.
Tesla, I'm talking about scale, not what is currently a minority activity. I know you're very keen on your EV, but I could point you in the direction of very many who are not. But that's not the point. This country will not be prepared for 2030, or get anywhere near it and it's time our leaders re-thought the daft and arbitrary date. By the way, they will change their minds on this, but they'll prevaricate for as long as possible, causing havoc in the motor industry in the meantime.
The heat pump thing is interesting. I live in a listed, part early 17th century house and I couldn't have a heat pump even if I wanted one. In fact, listing restrictions mean I can't even fit proper insulation. And then there's the issue of the millions of people who live in flats...
Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of doing stuff to reduce the cost of living, but what concerns me is the cost and practicality of getting to that point and at the moment we are not even remotely near being capable of delivering, and such is my disdain for our politicians, we won't be in my lifetime.
China consumes 55% of the world's copper
"China consumes more than half of the world's refined copper, and demand usually peaks during the September-October autumn months as the property and manufacturing sectors ramp up."
"While futures prices in London and Shanghai have fallen to multi-week lows, some investors have been building long positions, based on LME data, in anticipation that prices will turn higher in coming months because China's inventories are so low, and on hopes the Chinese government will roll out more aggressive economic stimulus measures.
The total net long position in LME copper rose to 9,488 contracts on Aug. 11, the highest since Feb. 10, data provided in the Commitments of Traders Report showed."

But electrification is viable, and is happening daily.
It’s nonsense that heat pumps don’t work, prices are dropping and usage is increasing.
I keep on hearing how if you don’t have a new build property then heat pumps don’t work. Our house is almost 100 years old and we had no problem even when it was -10c this winter.
Our electric bill was 25% of our estimated gas usage.
I haven’t even factored in EV usage.
There is a lot of scaremongering in the media about heat pumps, no doubt from engineers who want to service antiquated gas boilers or can’t be bothered to re-train.
Q, in part, that was my argument. If the price makes it unviable to produce batteries, for example, no one will make them and net zero will remain a pipe dream.
Adikt, I 100% agree with your post.
The net zero dream is on a par with some of the fantasy on here.
The only issue, if it is an issue with your post is, it asks more questions than gives answers.
Why has nobody come in for solg, because I firmly believe we've been up for sale for a good couple of years.
Whilst you quite clearly have an honest opinion as to something going on in the background regards a sale.
I think your correct, something is going on.
But I believe it's all hands to the pumps to find a way to make it economical to extract it.
Hopefully a more feasible way will be found.
Maybe they could employ fort, redknight or quady.
It's also possible a jv is actually on the table. But nm won't sign it because he's canny enough to know the pitfalls
They appear to have the answers the world's experts are searching for.
Lol so you expect BHP to yield 5% when you can stick your cash in NS&I and get 6.2% and zero risk, well you can’t because you’re broke from all your gambling.
Morning Quady… I agree… that’s a very well made point.. demand will be there to a point, but it slides away at higher prices…
