UK energy crisis: Former minister urges UK Government to invest in gas storage and stop relying on 'luck'
Former UK energy minister Charles Hendry has warned the government to stop relying on “luck” to keep gas flowing and urged it to invest in storage to ensure security of supply and to keep the lights on.
By Gina Davidson
Friday, 24th September 2021, 4:55 am
"A former Tory MP, Mr Hendry said the UK Government and energy watchdog Ofgem needed to stop pitting consumers against the industry, and £100 billion was needed to invest in the UK’s energy network to future-proof it from crises.
He said prices would continue to rise if there was no new strategy for the long-term supply of UK energy, hitting the poorest hardest, and admitted the market could not solve the current emergency."
Yesterday Radio 4 The Briefing Room's topic was the UK energy crisis assessed by a panel of experts. I think well worth a listen. Sir Dieter Helm identifies gas storage as the number 1 issue to be addressed by government and rejects Kwasi Karteng's view that gas storage is a red herring. He sets out in detail what is required to have a resilient energy system and bluntly says politicians need to stop faffing about and take decisions to make things happen.
Have a read of the replies here gents !

The interview at 8minutes mentioned we should receive the first defence contract in a few weeks, followed by the several ship deal, and another ship arriving the third week of October
Hi stokey
Can you please tell me what happened to the money from the 26million and 1.5million contracts
And if we know figures for the Dorset spirit and the several ship deal in October mentioned in the most recent interview?
Thank you so much
We may have an eventful week on the news front. On Thursday we should have the Quarter 3 trading update assuming that the Business Update last week was not given in replacement of it. Also we may have interim results following the change of year end. As I said yesterday I am personally expecting a loss for the quarter. The question is what other news will we have next week? I recall that JW did indicate in I think it was in the ********** interview that we would have news this month I cannot recall what it was though.

With a few other shares I've held, that had a name changes, the old boards are still there. Just not used, in favour of the new ones. At some point the ticker will change. Notice that a trade has appeared over there, but nothing here. So I guess it's just going through the process. Investing.com doesn't recognise HARL yet.
The new Board HARL is now up so need to post to that one not sure how long this board will remain.

Gottcha oldtramp thought it might have been
Okay, just looked, its 17.2 max. So the 9.4 must been unladen.
As you were. ;)
OT, is the max draught of 9.4 m when it's fully laden? Guessing it's empty, so would sit higher in the water.
??? :)
No silt in dry dock bubble got a 2 hour window max at high tide however it is under tow so far harder it is a big ole cork sure they can pull it off.
Side motors and reverse thrust will clear silt from bottom giving it 1.3 MTRS more depth but agree tight fit

looks like ministers are being blame for lack of gas storage in the UK. we should have built more. yes, cant resolve the immediate issue but they have to start building new storage to avoid this shortage going forward.
so, perhaps, good news if our gas cavern storage project may be fast tracked and comes as a bonus to all LTHs ?
"A lack of gas storage capacity has left the UK paying significantly higher wholesale prices at daily auctions than other European countries, which have been able to build up reserves over recent months. Instead of storing gas, the UK has increasingly relied on a “just-in-time model” for supply."

Chrisatrdg ref 11.51 post With lick by the time they are operational HARL would have secured sufficient contracts that it would not be much of a problem. Do you know who has the larger footprint?
Can anyone explain why we’re valued 5million less than the amount of contracts won in the last 5 months
That combined with the value of the infrastructure and its clear we’re massively successful undervalued.
The uk defence contract followed by the several ship deal in October and more should the catalysts to start a consistent uptrend to a credible valuation.

To my mind it's absolutely crazy that a decision one way or another hasn't been made on the Marine Licence. This is why I have always thought something about this decision is outside of whatever the standard process.Gas is, at this moment in time, the answer to the transition from coal etc until we have greener solutions.Governments have to invest in the future and it will cost far more to deal with the effects due to inaction now.Gas power stations further up the coast from island magee have approval and infa had approval for the well they drilled in the island magee area only a few years ago.Makes no sense at all .

Interesting comment from JW on this LinkedIn post from Invest Northern Ireland https://www.linkedin.com/posts/hollandkevin_northernireland-foreigndirectinvestment-activity-6846546136862351360-ZG7s The post reads 'Northern Ireland in Newsweek!
Powerful article published this week in Newsweek Country Reports about business in #NorthernIreland. I shared some of the success stories I've seen from our own companies and from international investors experience here and where I see the region going as industries rebound and Northern Ireland transforms.
Look up Newsweek.com for 20 pages of fantastic interviews with four of our universities; investors like KPMG and Seagate Technology ; several of our home-grown companies across technology, life sciences, agriculture and manufacturing; and key local industry bodies.
It gives a great overview of the many benefits of working in and with Northern Ireland. Come talk to us Invest Northern Ireland.
Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/3ki3YEv' JW's comment was 'Just a shame Invest NI has no interest in companies like Harland and Wolff and Islandmagee Energy who have invested substantial sums into Northern Ireland. Certainly not as keen to welcome investement and business as is indicated.'
Seems like JW has sought investment from Invest Northern Ireland who are not keen to invest.

That is the million dollar question Stokey have no doubt the market is concerned about another raise if they manage break even by year end i for one would be very happy....
With the change in year end will be having interim results next week. If so based on what I have observed from the Belfast Harbour website I am expecting a loss to be posted. That said I am still hopeful of a breakeven at years end. A lot of work appears to have been booked in for Q4.

Yes mate re Killick
I do think alot of people have missed out on Stokeys post re European Causeway it is due in dock tommorow and not due back in service till 9th Oct it has been replaced by NORBANK for the duration
Would I be correct in my assumption that killik invest on behalf of others ie nominees?

Link for 1st part of post
https://www.navylookout.com/dry-docking-the-royal-navys-aircraft-carriers-what-are-the-options/
With the risk of being seen as some type of closet researcher I have had a bit of time on my hands this morning and have found a bit more on the dry docking
Rosyth
“ Eleven tugs were needed to make a carefully orchestrated move that could only be done in good visibility and light winds. Although the basin entrance was substantially rebuilt in 2010, there is less than a metre of clearance on either side and just 50cm between the keel and the seabed. All these factors restrict access the facilities in Rosyth to limited periods of opportunity, far from ideal, especially if dry docking is urgent. Every entry and exit at Rosyth will involve a much greater risk of delay or even damage to the ship than almost all the other alternative docks in the UK.”
Also worth noting on chart Belfast is 20m wider and 1.5 m deeper
Then we have the tender
“ Rudders, Shafts and A-brackets, Plummer bearings and shaft removal, Sea Inlet Boxes and Sea Tubes; Complete LR survey of Anchor, chain and cables; Removal and replacement of underwater valves; Inspection and replacement of Cathodic protection systems, ships sensor; Ships Stabiliser deployment, inspection and repair!; Repair of ships underwater paint scheme; Undertake underwater repairs to known defects. In addition to this there will be a requirement to provide a facility for any emergency dockings that may be required”
So it would appear stabilisers have to be deployed
https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/belfast-and-rosyth-competing-to-drydock-carriers/
Thank you oldtramp.
Yes, I did see that also which confirms that BME knows both docks. That said QE has been back to Rosyth in 2019 so I suppose not guaranteed. Still fun trying to find out.
As far as I can see INFA is one big contract/announcement away from a significant change in valuation fortunes and there are many directions from which it can come.
My very best wishes to you also.

Sorry my mistake, still a load of nothing
Agree speedy it is speculative just thought it a coincidence that Dorset Spirit was purchased to work alongside Terra Nova
Only other one I could find was Searose FPSO again that works in the same area as DS
It has also docked at Belfast back in 2012 for repairs
https://www.offshore-energy.biz/photo-teekays-new-shuttle-tanker-for-canadian-offshore-oil/
Been looking into this again from cenkos
This includes ongoing client discussions around the refurbishment of a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit, that includes, inter alia, a refit of the internal accommodation areas, ability to run on greener fuels such as LNG, repairs and renovations of the main decks and providing the necessary infrastructure and capabilities to cater for battery banks in the future (c£20m).
