Rheinmetal- The US and the UK would never turn down $ or £ if the EU wanted the military kit
AgentB, the Daily Mail has a reputation of whipping up emotion for those whose political opinion seems to be slightly right of Attila with its sniping comments that have some truth but conveniently omit facts that provide a complete picture. Modern warfare as we have seen in every battle and war since the end of WW2 has been with conventional weaponry.
During this time there has been much standardisation, particularly where callibres are concerned. NATO has the supply chain that is not reliant on one manufacturer or country but accross many countries and defence suppliers. Whether we like it or not, NATO is not completely dependent on the USA nor is it completely capable of providing defence without USA. Rheinmetal, BAE Systems, Babc0ck, Thales, Lockheed, Qinetiq, Boeing and many others spring to mind.
Canada, Italy, UK, Australia, Finland, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands supply the US with some of their defence needs - there is a global reliance on each other, and that has helped preserve peaceful times for the vast majority of the developed world for decades.
Remember when Airbus threatened to cancel contracts with BAe as a result of Brexit and then had to backtrack when it turned out that we had watertight patents for the production of the wings?
AgentB, doesn't Europe think it needs UK at all in the event of a Russia conflict against Europe ?!!! I find this extraordinary if it doesn't. Has Europe forgotten 1939-1945 ?!!
It makes more sense for EU countries to secure the best weaponry they can to defend their nations. Protectionism just makes everyone worse off.
Time to invest in broomsticks instead. I understand that’s how Ursula van der Leyen equipped the German military while she was head of the Defence Ministry. Good to see the most incompetent politicians failing upwards, leading us all to the brink of WW3!
The European Union has threatened to cut off weapons to the UK and keep arms within the bloc - in new plans announced to prepare for a potential conflict with Russia.
The EU's industry commissioner Thierry Breton announced the overhaul to the bloc's military strategy yesterday, saying that the union had to look after itself in a 'security crisis'.
The plans would also see EU countries forced to limit the amount of weapons they could buy from UK-based firms, including BAE systems, if they wanted to receive extra funds from the bloc's budget allocation.

November 5th this year will be pivotal – either way the share price will rocket. Whether Trump wins or not, the SP should skirt around the £15 mark at the very least. I don't see why not – BAE has an immaculate balance sheet, huge, steady backlog of orders... every precursor for success is evident. Personally, this is a LTH, a SP of £20 is not far off in my opinion.
Shareholders seem to be in a bit of a "Goldilocks" situation where the share price is rising steadily and without any staccato movement. For me, this is just the way I like things, but at some point things will probably flatten off. We know that the company cannot fall into foreign hands from the Government's golden share and we also know that the primary role of Government is sovereign security.
My reading of the prospects for BAE are to see the shares continue to climb in reflection of the support that is being provided to Ukraine through the replacement of arms used and the requirement for sufficient munitions should the UK need to defend our territories or assist NATO members.
I am also mindful that should Mr Trump return to office, NATO will need to step up spending on defence not just on weapons and infrastructure but more importantly in basic combat trained personnel. Broker opinion seems locked on having BAE on their buy lists where most analyst target price seems to have been reached already.
The share chart for the last 5 years seem to betray that momentum is with us and 1400p is not out of the question over the next few months to align with the research from JP Morgan Cazanove. I cannot pretend for a moment to have a target price that will induce me to sell and I remain happy to buy at current prices.
I appreciate the discussion, not sure this is the right forum. My opinion, yes.
Anyone invested in what's termed 'unethical' stocks can't really comment, yes we're making gains from the misery in this world, ever has been the case. When you have strong willed people with different views at the top, insistent that theirs is the correct view, peace in this world is very fragile. Only by balancing arms on both (all) sides can we hope for a form of peace, hence investing in security in this form.
I write only because personally I'm here for investment views, not politics or discussions on other investments unless there's a link.
Alas-Smith, "Sadly, I find your post disturbing in that it is somewhat incendiary, certainly political and lacking in humanity."
I'm sorry you find my post disturbing, etc .., but I do have humanity - I do state my concern - but what can I really do about it, eg Protest and rant on the streets ?
My intention is not incendiary, but simply to state things as they are. Hamas started this current situation on Oct 7 last year. Yes, c.1,200 living in Israel were killed by them and hundreds more taken hostage. Hamas are the stated government of the Gaza peoples and their responsibility is to them. By Nov it was obvious to everyone that Israel would agressively pursue the policies that Netanyahu wants and that many Palestinians would die. I accept that you have more knowledge about the cultures in that area, as you lived there, but there are accepted principles for living that apply to all cultures. Hamas has effectively left it's own people to be slaughtered by the IDF as Hamas should have surrendered early on in order to save their 'own' people. What would a parent do to save their own child ? I cannot understand tbh how the IDF have killed so many Palestians because they have a very advanced military capability with great accuracy, etc... The reported unnecesary shootings by the IDF begars belief. I have some military training and no way would I shoot to kill the way the IDF has.
US VP Harris's call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israeli 'opposition' leader Gantz going to Washington DC for meetings this week is a veiled threat to Netanyahu that the US can become much more active re Gaza if it wants to. Netanyahu is destroying the goodwill towards Israelis everywhere.
I have NO INTENTION to be incendiary or lack Humanity. Yes, my post is Political, but I write as I see things and have no intention to offend.
Sadly, I find your post disturbing in that it is somewhat incendiary, certainly political and lacking in humanity.
NATO these days is reactionary and has a supportive role. That has been so for about 40 years.
Ukraine is the focus where European supplies are badly needed for Sovereign protection. It allplies to ALL European defences that are providing aid to that country. Palestine, Gaza, Israel conflict has potential for expansion which South Yemeni rebels are exploiting.
Having lived in Aden and attending school there during the troubles from 1964-66, subject to curfew and armed guard, the current footage of towns and environs show that little has changed physically. Rebels then only differ these days in the technology and weaponry. Mountains provide myriad of opportunity for isolated units.
Peace is always fragile wherever there is extreme wealth and extreme poverty.
For some reason, all my Capital letters were changed to lower case when I posted my last post, also probably this post. As a stickler for grammar and spelling, it is very annoying. Does someone know how to fix this please ?
i'm glad to be making gains from ba., especially from the actions of uncivilised thugs like the houthis who can't take responsibility for their own actions (see the sky post below), but i am very concerned for the innocent people of gaza. hamas should all surrender, and should have done last nov when it was obvious that thousands of ordinary gaza citizens would die, but it is evident that they are cowards and do not care about their own people. it is curious that none of the main media have said the latter !! the usa should also tell the israelis that usa are taking over and deliver food, etc..., and destroy hamas and their tunnels in a much lower mortality way. biden is so weak !! i am not ****** against the israelis but if a god (if there is one at all !!) still assigns the 'promised people' tag to the israeli nation then we all have a lot more to worry about for when we die !! netanyahu has destroyed the goodwill of israel and israelis will be viewed negatively for generations to come. has any western nation even sanctioned imports to them from israel ?!!
"houthis: 'sunak can recover sunken ship if he gets aid into gaza'
a senior houthi leader says he holds rishi sunak responsible for the sinking of the rubymar cargo ship.
mohammed ali al houthi said the prime minister has "a chance recover the rubymar" by allowing aid trucks into gaza."
NED purchase of £125k by Dr Ewen Kirk at 1256p. Always encouraging.
Onwards and upwards RF!
A large part of BAE's customer base isn't our MOD fortunately so don't see anything other than a slow drift up to my target £15 based on the size of the current order book. It would be great for BAE, BAB and RR if this useless bunch would smell those coffee beans cooking!
Well, there is updated news in anticipation of the budget that DOES suggest that the budget will not be increased. There does seem to me to be a complete misjudgement by politicians for the last 40 years on the role of the Armed Forces. The real threat that USA might reduce its exposure to NATO either directly with Trump at the helm or with his puppets controlling the purse strings if Biden is returned. IMO, it is vital that European security is beefed up not just with supply to Ukraine but also replenishment of depleted stock.
Mr Hunt might try and save Tory skin with tax cuts, but I feel that the mood in the UK is to kick the current presiding government out.
Defence is the only industry almost guaranteed to garner decent returns nowadays. BAE could easily hit £15 by the EOY, Rolls-Royce will probably get to £5, Rheinmetall undoubtedly will smash through Є500 (at the minimum). Airbus, Leonardo and Thales are also expected to see significant growth. Everyone is gearing up, and big time.
Not sure your information is correct. I refer you to this article https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/british-defence-spending-rise-by-more-than-1-billion-pounds-telegraph-2022-12-24/#:~:text=Finance%20minister%20Jeremy%20Hunt%20is%20expected%20to%20announce,a%20real-terms%20cut%20as%20inflation%20remains%20above%2010%25.
Defence Spending is not to be increased. This is going to be a knock to BAE in short term. Be ready for shake in budget speech
RF, Thursday reckon Leonardo should be getting uplifts from brokers. Got my eye on Thyssen Krupp too atm, think it could be a steal, just hope things calm down with the SP
Yes I have been in RHM for a year. Portfolio covers low tech - artillery shells as well as high tech. Seemingly announce material new contract wins weekly.
Interesting CEO interview with Reuters.
In BAE as well but later.
Defense sector has legs. European cos superior performance than US counterparts, which popped after initial Ukraine conflict but have lagged since.

I've seen Hensoldt keep getting talked about for a imminent uplift by brokers and such on websites etc, but I don't know much about them to be honest. Are you in with them RF?
Leonardo is a bit of a dark horse, been doing very well. Doubled since June 2023. You been following Kawasaki Heavy Industries by any chance? Seems criminally undervalued (like Leonardo and BAE) – with Japan spending record amounts on defence in regards to China getting rambunctious, I could see it rising.
