My brother (teaching assistant) and a friend have both had Covid. My brother is a fit marathon runner. My friend is in her 30's and had no underlying health conditions. Neither was very ill, my brother lost sense of taste and smell, nothing more, and my friend felt like a mild flu. Both have been left with long covid 10 months after having it - my brother has parosmia which is getting worse, and my friend has been left with a heart condition. So I'm not in agreement with the view that it's a semi serious virus, we are only starting to realise some of the long term effects.
Having now spoken to my brother he says that you can't always understand why the French do some of the things they do. However the report about the AZ vaccine not being suitable for older people means they have stopped vaccinating those in the older groups until they get what they see as a more suitable vaccine. Their vaccination numbers look a lot lower because they doing the two within a three week period. My niece has a medical condition which means she is vulnerable and has had her first vaccination and second due next week. My brother is 56 but has no idea when he is likely to get his done. We are hoping that we will be able to travel to France to see them later this year as we will have been vaccinated and are happy to take a test. Maybe we should get some shareholders perks as in free tests :)
Earth70000. A very articulate, well written and considered post. I completely agree with you.
Earth70000, have we become the flat earth society on Covid vaccines. Nova cut is a great company and greatly undervalued. Further to this Covid 19 is a deadly virus for a significant number of fellow citizens and over 120,000 families are grieving their loved ones.
WBAFC,
My unprofessional medical opinion is that the current vaccine serves as nothing more than a "peace of mind" vaccine. For those that have been terrified by the media, or believe every word on the internet without having any critical ideas around covid. The government shot themselves in the foot by scaremongering to the extremes in the first lockdown, attempting to force people to stay inside through fear. The reality is, covid isn't even a semi serious virus. It kills people, sure, especially those with already weakened immune systems, but the majority will find the flu to have a more significant effect on them. The restrictions were necessary as we leant how to treat covid effectively.
The amount of 'neglect' forced upon people who are not at risk of covid is surely causing more harm than good now, and the current vaccines are to breakdown this mentality that covid is in fact a terrible disease that will destroy our society. Cancer treatments- stopped. Surgeries- stopped. CPR- delayed as PPE is put on... patients are dying from this. The recent scaremonger was that hospitals were full... the reason? DNR was stopped being automatically put onto covid patients- regardless of their chances. There are beds and beds of people in medically induced comas that are predicted to never recover. This is just another reason why death figures are so odd, because there are people from the summer, dying now from covid, after sitting in a bed for 7 months in a coma... This is why the hospitals are full. Not because of the R rate.
The world endemic has been thrown around recently, and lets face it, those that suffer from covid are those that have serious underlying health conditions are likely to get no real release from the vaccine (albeit these health conditions are not always caused by an individuals choices and therefore shouldn't be forced to suffer). We will learn to live with covid. Testing will be useful for 2-3 years as a minimum to track strains- especially to keep track of the vaccine effectiveness. I would also imagine that there will be a booster jab to people over 60 every year as it circulates our society freely- like the flu.
We had our vaccines yesterday and feel fine today. Having a chat later with my brother who lives in France, I'll see what he says about the feeling over there.
Saintsmith come on, they have jabbed nearly 20m people here, 230m plus in US plus most of Israel, if people were dropping dead as a result you don’t think the media, or at the very least, social media would be screaming from the rooftops?
Fiercely nationalistic, Sanofi , figs will change dramatically if they get through trials imo. K
Wilson , I’m not french but I’m also wary about vaccines . My wife’s friend worked at Harvey Nichols in Leeds and died the day after taking the vaccine . She was a very fit , glam lady of 68 years old with no underlying health issues . This wasn’t reported by any local press or media .
A work colleague of mine couldn’t get out of bed for four days and had to crawl up his stairs on all fours for two of these days after receiving the vaccine . (52 years old ) .
I am wary and vaccine passports scare the bejesus out of me as everybody reacts differently to which ever the chosen vaccine of the day is administered to them .
Lucky dip ?
I’m not trying to scaremonger but in my opinion accurate testing 72 hrs before travel has more chance of opening borders than a out of date vaccine passport .
Safer too IMO
Wilson, I remember reading reports a few months ago estimating vaccine resistance generally at around 40% in France, the comments made by Macron won’t have helped. It seems to be a cultural thing there (libertarian stance perhaps?) but I know they’ve had big problems with measles outbreaks in recent years for example, as a result of the anti vax sentiment.
I was against taking vaccines when I thought they were being rushed out, but then I read the science and changed my stance, can any of the French speakers tell me why if correct 58% are against taking a liberty giving vaccine.

"We did not manage to detect [the variant] early enough. When we realised it we were already on very high rates," he added.
All eyes in France are now fixed on Dunkirk and other similar hotspots like Nice. Panicked health officials are warning that the overwhelmed hospitals and rising epidemic is a window into what is to come for the rest of the country as the vaccination programme is in disarray.
Opinion polls show about 58 percent of French citizens say they won't take the jab, making it the most vaccine-averse country in the world.
