Another article on the same team dated a couple of days earlier.
Doctors are acting on the results of the tests the team are producing??
Veronica said Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is leading the way in testing, adding: “The doctors are coming down regularly to get the results of priority patients and they all said it’s a game changer for the NHS. If we complement their tests with this rapid test they can go back to the ward and the patient can receive the treatment they need probably a good half a day earlier.
“I was confident it was going to work but to see the delight on people’s faces, it’s giving the NHS another tool. The situation is horrifying so we need as much help as possible and this is a tool to help.”
Skittish I don't know what you mean when you say " I think it will require a proper validation process"?
https://www.basingstokegazette.co.uk/news/regional/andover/18354750.basingstokes-super-fast-covid-test-set-rolled-across-uk/
"This assay is not dependent on the same reagents as the other front line tests and therefore is much less susceptible to reagent shortages which is a major concern for the front line tests currently in use."
Also:
“We were in a fortunate position to be able to link with a local company in Chandlers Ford, PrimerDesign, who partnered with us to provide the testing kits needed and we are very delighted that we could join forces to make this a reality so quickly.”
From the above I think although Primerdesign provided the testing kits, they did not contain "the same reagents as the other front line tests".
News of a successful Novacyt Antibody test should land first..
Didn't Han**** say that 150 tests had failed, i can't remember which test this was but they must have chassed these through pretty quick.
We still have another 2 hours, never give up "theonlyways"
Must admit my knowledge of testing and testing the test lol is about l a month old. I've been waiting 18 months for my other bio stock to enter phase 1 testing.
I can't imagine the UK allowing any steps to be missed. Hopefully the process will be sped up. We know that Novacyt progressed quickly.
My finger in air guess bases on Novacyt is around month for PHE approval. They can run the tests sids by side against the "primary" Novacyt tests. Plus whatever tests they ran to test original Novacyt test packs.
Then we are looking at manufacturing and distribution, with big partners involved could see this being done within a month.
No magical £2 today IMO
Oh no - I think it will require a proper validation process, just as they are going through with all the other tests.
But if it does show promise - and if it does indeed solve quite a few of the problems which the other tests have - then it could be fast tracked.
But the government are committed to 100K tests per day by month end so will do nothing to imperil that target.
Thanks , Hancoc speech yesterday said UK had brilliant drug development companies but lacked in the industrial production side and hoped this crisis would develop both as a result so it would make sense the gov assisted them to partner with a large producer to allow both firms and the country to gain moving fwd and provide great service to the crisis in hand. It all sounds good!
@greenhighlander
In the USA, the govt can use a patent themselves without challenge, but they must provide "reasonable" compensation to the IP holder. Of course their idea of reasonable isn't necessarily what most businesses would envisage. Might be the same here.
"I don't see how OptiGene's announcement is beneficial to Novacyt? Surely it would be detrimental? Anyone? Thanks"
Optigene appears to supply the IP ie. they designed the test
PrimerDesign supplied the testing kits ie. the thing which actually made it work
That is how I read it.
Of course it would be (hopefully) up to PrimerDesign to actually scale it up and roll it out eventually with their new Big Pharma partners, after all the usual authorisations.
I don't think they'll throw the rule book out of the window, but there is enormous pressure here to get things done and fast.
Vanv you missinterpreted my statement. This is potentially great news for both companies.
I'm told it would have to be a different kit to those uawd now as LAMP requires different Enzymes and also use more primers for lamp too. I don't know what a Taqman probe is but I belive this is a change as well.
"They " should be written the government sorry
Yes i see that , in cases like this where the country needs thier idea or IP can they just commandeer the the IP and get it produced at scale??
I don't see how OptiGene's announcement is beneficial to Novacyt? Surely it would be detrimental? Anyone? Thanks
VanV noted. They are speaking to Gov and will then have to go through testing. Could be months away.. But still if they use Novacyt kits or IP this is great news for company and more importantly the world :-)
The press release says "OptiGene’s LAMP COVID-19 test has now passed validation and is ready to be utilised"
To me that means it is validated - but whether that means independently validated or validated by PHE England or any other regulator, at this stage, is probably unlikely.
It appears that they may have something in which PrimerDesign is involved which deals with the deficiencies of the many other tests which are available - speed, through put, transport etc.
@skittish Apologies, I misread the release.
@skittish It doesn't say it's validated. It says:
Dr Veronica Fowler and her colleague, Dr Bryony Armson, have been working in their spare time to validate the assay.
That doesn't mean it's actually validated.
Press release says it's passed validation with assay etc to be discussed with PHE in the next 24 hours, but no info.
Tricky the virus has not peaked yet and now we have a lockdown we should see the number of transmissions declining. If you test everyone now , when do you retest them? In two days time? Test those who have had symptoms and need to return to work, mass testing of those without symptoms is pretty pointless IMO.
There appears to be no public validation data as yet, or not that is easily available.
In this press release they say it has been "validated"
http://www.optigene.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/OptiGene-Press-Release.pdf
I guess follow them on twitter for more updates.
They seem keen to get this off the ground and PrimerDesign are involved.
Optigene may have course made a break though.
But they will require major support from a much larger company to develop at scale.
PrimerDesign will be privy to all the relevant information as they have been involved in the testing.

The real question is: how much enzyme can you produce per day?

We can produce hundreds of thousands of tests worth per day.
Hi again. I know I vented my frustration yesterday about the testing position. I am not a medical expert, but it strikes me that testing is the number 1 answer right now. Economies simply cannot recover if people cannot get to work, and that will drive urgent action. Social distancing cannot last forever, but who would want to go out apart from those that have to -call out to all key workers here especially NHS - we owe you! Every country is now realising that robust testing has to be the way forward. Yes, we need a cure, but having that doesn’t suddenly mean we will all rush out again. 100,000 tests per day by the end of April....if I could test my family twice a day right now i probably would....we probably need many times these figures being quoted and so do the rest of the world....but it’s right that the key workers are able to get tested daily first. And if i was testing my family daily, the other I would want to know is that it was accurate...otherwise that does causes even more issues. What does it mean for the share price....I have no idea - but I am 100% in the camp that says test as many as you can as often as you can...if that is millions every single day then let’s not wait...we have heard that money is no object after all! Anyway, all IMO of course!
