VOD cut its div and the SP is back down at 144 today so capital losses plus div loss.
IMB div is a differentiator to the rest of the sector and I think a cut would crystallise capital losses. Anyway. even if was a cut, a new glide path wouldn't need to start until Q3 next year. We should have news on a CEO and regulatory clarity in that timeframe. If both those are positive, wouldn't want a div cut as a headwind to recovering capital losses
It seems that the widely regarded view on here is that the dividend looks too good to be true (It actually isn't - its the desperately low share price which creates this illusion not an unrealistically high payout).
The second point of discontent is "what good is a high yield if half my capital has vanished". My avg is around 2000p so not as bad as some and 18 months dividend (I have already had 6 months of these) would recover the difference....
.... However it seem that 2 birds could be killed with one stone. Why don't we maintain shareholder returns but take half of the dividend and use it to buy back shares. This would simultaneously stop red flags appearing over dividend yield and surely would start to apply an upward pressure on share price. 2 years of this strategy would remove 12% of shares from the market and I suspect all else being equal push the SP closer to mid 2000s.... Dividend could then return to full strength but now with a 7-8% yield and the balance of cash being saved (12% less shares to pay dividend to) could be used to reduce debt....
... Seems so obvious - Any counter thoughts to this?
Very quiet here...
CDC says no single brand is responsible for vaping crisis. Appears to be strongly tied to illicit market.

The large sell off also seems to related to the vaping deaths in the USA and Trump wanting an immediate ban before establishing the true causes of the deaths, which seem to be cannabis related vaping. I havn`t heard of anymore vaping related deaths recently. Seems to be an over reaction on this but will take time for the SP to recover. Still getting a very good dividend as long as the SP dosn`t go any lower so will continue to hold these.
Probably selling anticpating a dividend cut and debt levels. With no new releases, then will think the worse. Will go below £16 if no news releases soon.
Is there any reason / news that IMB has been dropping the last few days yet BATS has been rising?
Gbp strength against Usd ?
Yet the SP is again dropping. Never understand this.
Marshall Wace reduced their short to 0.59% on 25 Nov. IMB bought 200k shares on 25 Nov..
Takerovers in ths tobacco sector are difficult lots of red tape but imps are vulnerable
Yes, but with that short before last divi and now sentiment from BATS more bullish that's with today's move is going to make that an expensive short IMHO, Plus with a recent BOD buy of £1.5 worth of shares I feel most bad news/risk already factored in, indeed at these prices is IMB a takeover target?
Thanks 1fruitcake. I still have a lot to learn, but will get there...
1fruitcake great words of wisdom, I've only been trading for little over a year and set out my strategy for the long term vowing to 'ignore the short term noise'. I found that it has been easier said than done as we're being bombarded by 'Breaking News' and updated prices every second, but still stick to it as I try to do my DD before buying in and as long as my thesis holds it doesn't matter what price other people are willing to pay for my shares.
I sometimes wish we could return to the pre-internet era where you were not expected to be reachable for 16 hours a day!
I’ve been trading since 85 when you had to go to the bank to trade!!, after teletext! Bought mags joined share clubs, here we are everything is instant, why has Odey had two shocking years .NONE of us possess a crystal ball. You don’t need to know everything. Trends and sentiment are massive get a feel for what is fair price and work off that. DONT follow the masses you’ve missed it. I just created a pretend portfolio for a mate who thought it looked easy. I spend 4 to 6 hours a day working out my plans.
