Its fairly unequivocal what the BNP are saying - 'Mahdi said the BNP will not include anything in its election manifesto that could destroy the environment in the name of development projects.'

Would an open pit coalmine at Phulbari come under this very definition? Absolutely.

For the BNP its victory at any cost - their youth turnout at the rally last week was not the numbers they were expecting, in the thousands rather than the millions they expected. By changing tack announcing a green manifesto they are trying to appeal to the NCP voter base. If they win the election because of green policies will they then immediately go against these policies and announce an open pit coalmine the next day?

Nation Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam has urged the government to announce the election roadmap after the publication of the July Charter, showing respect to the victims of the 5 August mass upsurge.

The July Charter must be prepared by 30 working days and then, the roadmap of the next general election will have to be announced, he said after emerging from a meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus on Monday.

During the meeting, Nahid also a former adviser of the interim government, said that the reform if the Election Commission is needed to hold a free, fair and credible parliamentary election. The commission needs to be restructured to make the mission successful, he added.

The US Embassy in Bangladesh has warned its citizens of danger and to stay away from protests.

Professor Yunus to stay on, how far has the crisis cleared?

Yunus yesterday stated he promised not to stay 1 day after 30 June 2026. The army have backtracked and are now working with Yunus. Yunus clearly has ambitions to stay until 30 June 2026.
