I think it depends on how well the new brands are bedding in and what margin they are bringing to the table. It’s easy to forget that some of these brands are still in their relative infancy. I’ll have a look at some of your numbers next week Oke as want to get a handle before the results.

I do something very similar to what you are suggesting with CFDs. I set a stop lose at 5% and just take it on the chin if I called it wrong. With the aim to call right more than I call wrong.

TFG - you're wrong here mate. I'm in Glencore and the payouts as DTN says are not dividends in the usual sense.

Specifically they come off the buy price for the purposes of your CGT, if not held with an ISA.

IG process them as a dividend but that's not their true legal form.

What's the going rate then? When I've done sell CFDs in the past the platform has paid me interest less a fee. How do you find out what rate shorters are paying? Surely that's a confidential commercial agreement between the broker and the borrower?

Oke/T4G - The impairment might also involve the dodgy acquisition as the consideration is being renegotiated.

What I want to know is the forward guidance and the substance behind this supposed 60% sales increase. I want to know if it's tangible or is it measuring against a weak comparative. If it's bona fide then the price could potentially rocket.

Points to be aware of - possibly more skeletons in the closet if as they move towards more standard accounting procedures that might uncover wrong doing not previously found. It's amazing what can pop up in an unloved balance sheet.

Hi T4G - what do you mean by operating under proper commercial terms? These deals are done through the large brokers no?

hi alex - it depends on whether they are planting stories or carrying out in-depth detailed research. some of these shorters carry out extraordinary research and more often seem to get it right than not. cine short interest started increasing heavily once they purchased regal with a **** load of debt and the they were bang on. they have been on the money here as well if they opened during the all time highs. i think a lot of us underestimated the impact high inflation and interests rates would have on a lot of the growth shares.

i'm not intentionally trying to defend shorting but it has its uses in holding dodgy bods to account. plus a lot of shorting by the institutions is more often than not a hedging strategy, especially when using cfds which i think someone suggested in here should also be banned.

plus i've tried short cfds and it's incredibly difficult to get right and the downside risk is unlimited.

Hi Alex - My point is that you've picked the most polarised one off extreme example out there to back up your point.

The market is not fair and not efficient. When you start talking about market efficiency is all a bit academic in my opinion.

With the greatest of respect T4G if you have 30 years on investing under your belt I would have expected you to have a more rounded view than your MM conspiracy which you post about pretty much on a daily basis.

Hedge funds shorted more shares than actually existed (believe it or not) and the share price plummeted to $1. One extreme.

Then Reddit posters on the Wall St Bets sub-thread pointed out the potential for a short-squeeze and as retail investors (and professionals) piled in, the shares rocketed up towards $350. The opposite extreme.

At either $1 or $350 no one could claim that GameStop was correctly valued by the market.

Note: a movie is being released on 22 September 2023 called "Dumb Money" ... stars Seth Rogan, Paul Dano ... a comical take on the GameStop saga. Worth a look.'

You can see see why GME was being so heavily shorted though. A completely outdated business model and no real strategic plan to change or reinvent the wheel - bit like Cineworld in the UK.

I'd love to know what percentage of those initial short squeezers are now well and truly spiked after diamond hands and all that jazz.

In terms of looking at valuations and relevance to SP you probably couldn't have picked a worse example.
