Dulwichman,
I appreciate that you have your own views, and it's valuable to consider each other's perspectives. Your subjective opinions and critiques highlight important issues regarding the necessity for a more active trade strategy in the UK, particularly after Brexit. Our politicians might not be so much lazy - but rather having their hands tied behind their backs. My argument is that if Brexit was meant to grant us the freedom to trade globally, as promised by the people who peddalled it, then it contradicts that goal if we seem to be subordinate to the U.S. and their demands on our trading partners. I believe we were equal members in the EU, which was good.
Under the influence of Trump, which is how it's panning out, it is far from what Brexit supporters described as 'taking our country back.' Imagine if we don't do as we're told - Trump would probably revert to dictator mode again and want to buy the UK, like he's suggested with Canada and others. I don't admire his protectionism, it's globally damaging.
