".....but its not in SFO interest to put a company out of business."
They couldn't care less my Friend. They're Civil Servants, totally unaccountable to anyone (don't forget they're a "Non Ministerial Government Department") and just counting the days to a lovely taxpayer funded 100% safe index-linked pension.
A company goes out of business because of their dilatory behaviour? No problem- a bit of flak from the press for a few days, some letters to "The Times", indignant questions in the house then a few months later it all dies down and the SFO moves on to its next victim. Sue them I hear you say-right. Have you ever tried suing the government- very costly and very time consuming. If the company is out of business who pays for it all?
On another subject have just had a look at Petrofac's figures for the 4 years during which Lufkin dished out about $53million
in inducements to do business. The revenue for those 4 years totalled $19.414 BILLION so I would suggest it would have been very easy for 4 senior executives in cahoots to hide the payment of such comparatively trifling sums. To bring it downscale a bit, similar to having received $19,414 and losing $53 of it somewhere.
