UKsteveg. I agree it is often a fine line. Bingo, lottery, casino slot machines are all in effect gambling. Spread betting,,CFD's are more risky undoubtedly than investing in shares because of margins, but there is still underlying knowledge required and an expert will fare better than a novice so it isn't strictly gambling it is a riskier form of investment. The one I find really interesting is horseracing, it is not strictly a lottery as there is a clear notion via the odds system which horse is more likely to win. This is little different from investing in shares and some very large amounts are made on the horses. Similarly football betting, it is fairly clear which team should win on paper and those who spend time studying teams form will do better than merely putting a pin in. Thus if spreadbetting, horseracing and football are exempt CGT, why isn't sharetrading. Provocative food for thought!!!
