If you get the heebie jeebies over a fund taking a short position, the stock markets certainly are not for you. If you can't handle volatility, growth is not for you. I take very little notice on who is short on what, and take more notice on research, product market fit and unit economics of such companies....I.e. Will they ever make a profit.

I regularly take short positions purely as a hedge, especially for currency exposure. A fund going short does not necessarily mean they expect the company to crash and burn.

Seeing as we are discussing facts now, would you like to share how much MDZ made in profit from the contract wins you mention? Just 2 contracts in the entire year? So rev of just 850k. We can safely imply that there has been jack other contracts since March, and the usual waffle regarding "continued talks with blah blah blah" amounted to....you guessed it....diddly squat. If there was any other contract wins, we can also assume that they are so insignificant as to not be worth the cost of an RNS....certainly far below £350k in which they reported on. I wonder what the threshold revenue is that MDZ thinks is noteworthy to update the market?

Tech and ftse listings just do not go. Its a great shame really, but LSE must do more to attract high growth tech into the London markets. Biggest highlights for me is the $8bn reduction in debt. At this rate, shell could be debt free in 10-12 quarters! No dividend raise is definitely the prudent thing to do and shown they have learnt from past errors as one swallow does not make a summer!

Results came at a time where crude has come off highs, so the drop cannot be entirely attributed to Q3 results. Also a point to remember is that over the quarter, crude has averaged 70ish +- $2 and gas at much lower than the current spot...if crude stays in the 80s or pushes higher still, Q4 will be interesting.

All to play for here still. After the initial unsurprising hissyfit, I fully expect shell to carry on pushing upwards.

Indeed brucejamieson. The vast amount of instruments that are designed to profit from a failing company are used as an insurance utility to protect against a fall, I.e. short selling a stock via a put option and buying home insurance are essentially the same thing.

However, I agree that some do use short selling to distort stock prices, particularly those who actively short sell and then release reports outlining the reasons why they shorted, in which some are very poorly written and conjecture at best.

A blanket ban is not the option. Better defining how such instruments can and cannot be used is what is needed, I.e. a limit on how many shares can be sold short as a % of float, or in some extraordinary situations, a temporary of short selling on a case by case basis. In reality...virtually impossible to police this as it then becomes a quagmire of legal mumbo jumbo that no one will understand let alone be able to enforce.
