Hey Cheesh,
Market abuse is certainly illegal- EU regulations 2014. Punishable with a 7 year prison sentence; a fine of up to 5 million for individuals and at least that of the gain established by such market abuse by the firm if they are seen as compliant (or complacent about monitoring and maintaining market integrity).
Market abuse now includes 'general conduct' which aims to manipulate prices to disadvantage investors. This can include distorting price setting mechanisms and as I understand it, bear raids which are co-ordinated attempts to drive down prices irrespective of information in the market place. I think that people in financial services (especially hedge funds) think that laws don't apply to them but obviously they do- think Enron, Lehman Bros.
If the law allows hedge firms to take down successful firms whatever their performance then the economy suffers massively so it's good that it doesn't I'd say. I don't believe these people aren't talking to each other- if we get anything other than a good result against good data tomorrow I don't think I'll be the only one raising a flag. Usually shorters target failing firms but now swarming on Pets are Us; IQE and BooHoo- small, fast growing, innovative and successful firms.
