Renault's NCM commitment
At its recent Electropop event, Renault Group committed to using NCM (nickel, cobalt, manganese) cathode chemistries for its battery cells.
NCM cathode chemistries have grown to dominate the battery cell market and will account for a forecast 53% of global battery demand in 2021 according to Benchmark’s Lithium ion Battery Database.
Despite NCM’s growing role in the supply chain, there has been a resurgence in LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cathodes over the past two years as a lower cost —and cobalt and nickel free— alternative.
But as Renault's decision illustrates, NCM will be the predominant cathode chemistry for Western OEMs in the 2020s.
Renault cited several reasons for sticking with NCM, such as its cost-to-performance ratios, its suitability in colder climates, and the favourable economics of recycling NCM materials.
