Doggy, my point would be that studying mathematics in school, on its own, confused me but when it was used for a purpose (physics, for example) then It made a lot more sense.
What you call 'Home Economics' in the U.S. probably equates to what was called 'Domestic Science' in the U.K. It was unusual (at least in the 70's) for men (boys) to study this here. If a boy wanted to study domestic science in school it would have been justified as a career move into , say, Hotel Management.
Girls were not seen to be career-minded (or perhaps they were expected to stay at home and prepare meals) and then the feminist movement reared its ugly head.
