Some quarters in the West need to be careful. Russia now is not the Russia of old. Putin has done well in the eyes of the majority. Russian debt stands at 20% of GDP compared that to the +100%’s in Europe.
They are pretty much independent in terms of energy, natural resources, food and production. Ironically the wheat from the fertile Ukrainian plains provides food. What they miss they get from China.
The West can threaten all they want, we would be the economic and political looser. Europe depends on Russia for 40% of its gas. Any cuts there would have an instant impact on the economy and human well being. That alone would open up tentative eastern block patriotic divisions.
As for financial sanctions do you (rhetorically) believe Londongrad with its deep rooted Russian financial backing would seriously cut its nose to spit its face. For sure a few oligarchs will have their bank accounts frozen and the tabloids will say how tough our pseudo ‘Churchill’ is but it won’t make any difference. Too many politicians with noses in the trough. Too much for them to loose.
If Russia invades any sanctions imo will backfire on the West. Don’t forget they have a population that is compliant. After all our lockdowns and any hint at mega fuel price rises, £200 to fill up the car. There will be riots here like in Kazakhstan!
Our politicians know that hence the response will be diluted to rhetoric. The Russian politburo also know that hence why they can carry on regardless.
There primary fear comes from the Ukrainian’s themselves. How much of a fight will they put up. Their history is littered with hatred for Moscow not just from the 4m deaths in the 1930’s Stalin years from forced famine and starvation. Their worry is the body bags from Ukraine not the West’s empty threats.
It’s the fight from Ukraine that is the concern hence the huge numbers of troops that they will need.
Any invasion and we all loose but the Ukrainian people followed by the West perhaps loose more.
Post covid the world is changing. China and Russia are the emerging superpowers. We the West have become obsessed with ‘me’. An ever evolving celebrity, I want easy money, self centred, cancerous culture with dubious moral foundations. We tolerate criminals, lies and wrongdoings in order of self and not to offend society. Wrongfully purported as freedom. Our moral decline will in time will be our downfall.
Imo China and Russian see that and want to keep a lid on it in their culture.
The price of freedom, hey. Shame some take it for granted!
Just my observations.
