Its been interesting to read about patents. They appear valuable for innovation, that governments will enforce in law. I havent read why governments make laws that say it's good to do so, but I did read about an example of the sewing machine that has many components (up to 100) each which has a patent. this machine (which changed the world) started off with one invented patent. other manufacturers could copy this patent and make an inferior machine but they didnt, they invented other components, and by giving them patents too, improved the machine and made it what it is today.
IMO Musk is attempting to be utilitarian, which is always fine in principle, but it can kill innovation. If a best-in-class invention can be hurriedly copied and made inferior by that process, it will hinder innovation from elsewhere.
