Sabrina and Idris Elba who are close friends of Jade and Julian Dunkerton are heavily marketing their latest venture, namely Sable Labs, melanin inclusive skincare. During a speech at a PR event in the last few days Sabrina made the commen that it is a family business and it will stay that way, they do not want private investors.
This is what I believe is influencing Julian Dunkerton. He let the business go public, at the time, it seemed the right thing to do, to turn it in to what it became, he then had two daughters, from his previous marriage, and now a third with Jade, and subsequently, only recently a son. So he now has an heir to the family businesses, and the cider business remains private, and this is what I think in the main is motivating him to take SuperDry back privately, it's the only one in all the ventures he has that isn't private, and readily available for the family to benefit from in its entirety. It mushroomed, it ran its course as a PLC, covid hit, it knocked and rocked many businesses, especially retailers, and they've had a tough few years, but are finally making a breakthrough, and so this is absolutely the ideal time for Dunkerton to capitalize on this and take it back private now, knowing that he will benefit hugely for the benefit of his family now that the retail markets are showing signs of shoots of new growth.
It's a shrewd move, he will definitely take it on imo, he has enough private funds to provide security against any capital loans from financiers, who will no doubt be given a small % slice of the pie, until all loans are repaid. It is surely a win win for him.
A cva is out of the question, he stands to lose everything, through possible rival bids, damage to reputation, loss of credit control during this vital phase, and a very real prospect of a huge loss of customer base who will lose trust. Moreover, he has no control over a cva, and ultimately this is about control.
