Europe is experiencing a surge in coronavirus infections to levels not seen in months, in a development that is alarming health officials and sparking fears that the continent could be engulfed by a new wave of the pandemic this winter.

Hans Kluge, regional head of the World Health Organization, said the pace of transmission across Europe, as well as Central Asia, was a “grave concern”, adding that the region was moving back to the “epicentre” of the health crisis.

“Today, every single country in Europe and Central Asia is facing a real threat of Covid-19 resurgence, or is already fighting it,” he said.

Germany on Thursday reported 33,949 new infections, its biggest daily increase since December. The number of Covid-19 patients being treated in its intensive care wards is the highest since May.

So, are we saying that the futility analysis is an example of Sherlock’s dog that didn’t bark in the night?

If the impact of the drug after 300 patients was low, the trial would have been stopped (as has been the case in a number of other trials). The DMC have not published the analysis but the trial has not been stopped – we know the dog did not bark, even though we did not see the dog.

Marsden spotted this dog had not barked – hence his grin. Polygon have spotted it, hence the loading up.

Not a very insightful piece - more insights on this board. He does highlight that the success of this drug will also help in fighting other viruses, with many expecting it to play a major role in the next couple of years. So sharing anyway.

Came across this report - sorry if its been posted before. Interesting list of COVID-19 Emerging Drugs - see below. Don't know how accurate the list is but struck me that its very light on big pharma, with the exception of Amgen. Does suggest that they will either seek to acquire SNG or potentially partner with SNG. The partnership does not seem to be discussed on this board but its what BioNTech have done with Pfizer, and SNG did in the past with AZ.

Goldforefinger, agreed. In fact we have the perfect mix for an immunity busting variant: lots of people infected, so lots of variants; and lots of people with immunity, so greater natural selection pressure for a variant that can break through.

Goldforefinger, if its AY.4.2 it could be 10-15% more transmissable. The key question is whether an other variant will break through vaccine or post infection immunity. If that happens, we will need lots of SNG as we have not geared up our vaccine machine to be able to respond quickly.

There is an alternative to a takeover - the licence approach. Its worked pretty well for BioNTech.

The UK situation is much worse, I am afraid. In the week ending 2 Oct, 940,000 people in the UK had Covid. Thats around 1 in 70. The number you quote is those that tested positive and reported it. Have a look at the ONS Covid infection Survey, which is the testing of a random sample of people - so pick up those that do not report etc.
