RE: Most of the World’s Vaccines Likely Won’t Prevent Infection NYT20 Dec 2021 09:21
I have been thinking about whether previous infection from beta could give better protection. I think the higher immunity from any infection (as opposed to vaccines), summer weather and younger population are important points. This is where my non-existing genomics is a gap.
But my observation is that Omicron might be genetically closer to Beta.
So its seems that the three mutations (Wikipedia) of particular interest in the spike region of the Beta genome:
· K417N
· E484K
· N501Y
It would seem that Delta does not have any of these mutations. But Omicron has them all. And a whole load more. So the South Africans who previously had beta Covid might be more protected than the Europeans who had alpha and delta covid.
