YLB SIGNS AGREEMENTS WITH COMPANIES FROM AUSTRALIA, FRANCE AND ARGENTINA TO TEST LITHIUM PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES IN ORURO AND POTOSÍ
The state-owned Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB) signed agreements with the companies EAU Lithium Pty Ltd (Australia), Tecpetrol S.A. (Argentina) and Geolith Actaris (France) to test their technologies in the use of evaporite resources in the Coipasa (Oruro), Empexa and Pastos Grandes (Potosí) salt flats.
“The companies that today sign agreements with our company YLB are making the dream of many people from Oruro possible. From now on, Oruro lithium will be explored with advanced technologies, and we are sure that we will achieve success,” said President Luis Arce, during his speech at the signing ceremony of the aforementioned agreements.
Within three months, a period in which these companies must test their technologies, we will begin negotiations to sign an exploitation contract,” said the Head of State, pointing out that the National Government's strategy consists of attracting the best technology that adapts to the salt flats and allows the highest quality and quantity of lithium to be produced.
In turn, the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, Alejandro Gallardo, explained that, once the tests based on the defined parameters are carried out, “we will take the next step, which is the negotiation of a contract based on respect for our economic model, our sovereignty, our Mother Earth and sustainability, always seeking the benefit of Bolivians.”
"We have technologies from different parts of the world, from different countries, that will allow us to carry out an exhaustive analysis of the technical and environmental aspects, always with the aim of guaranteeing sustainability," added the Minister.
In this regard, the president of YLB, Omar Alarcón, said that in the first phase, as established by the agreements, efficient and environmentally friendly technologies will be tested in the Coipasa salt flats, in Oruro, and Pastos Grandes and Empexa, in Potosí.
These tests will last between 90 and 120 calendar days, and, if they conclude with a positive validation, "YLB will begin a process of negotiating contracts to implement industrial-scale plants, which will allow increasing production and generating greater income for our communities, regions, departments and for all Bolivians," he added.
In January 2024, the Government launched a second international call to select companies with technologies adapted to the characteristics of the brines of various salt flats. This process culminated with the technical evaluation of proposals in June 2024, and is now consolidated with the signing of agreements that will initiate advanced technological testing.
