Latest article from me writing in The Ojo-Yoshida Report. Ahead lies a battle between the giants of the #tech industry that will redefine the #automotive #digital #****pit and the #incabin experience. The stage looks set for an epic race between Apple, Amazon, Cerence Inc., Google, and Microsoft to rethink and redesign the automotive experience. High-performance processors from Qualcomm and NVIDIA look set to be harnessed by system developers to power the next-generation of ****pit features.
The immersive user experience #IUX will combine #eyegaze, #gesture, and #voice with capacitive and haptic touch inputs. #HD displays will extend from pillar to pillar across the vehicle dashboard, providing driving information and streaming video. Add-in #5G connectivity, cloud computing and over-the-air updates, and the interior of the car will never look or feel the same again.
An #augmentedreality #HUD will transform the windshield into a human-vehicle interface #HVI that projects route guidance and #safety critical information directly into the driver’s line of sight, ensuring they can drive while keeping their eyes and attention fixed on the road ahead.
Eye-gaze and gesture recognition will be provided by face and eye-tracking companies like Seeing Machines. Gaze tracking has morphed beyond simply monitoring the driver for #distraction and #drowsiness. The next frontier is #interiorsensing, and the rear-view mirror has emerged as the key integration point, as shown by Magna International’s occupant monitoring #OMS mirror at #CES.
Through Critical TechWorks, and with a clear roadmap for precision eyegaze tracking, BMW Group is judged most likely to be the current leader in R&D for the immersive user experience.
Ford Motor Company, having hired Doug Field from Apple and positioned to play the IUX trend perfectly, needs to pause and rethink its longterm eyegaze feature roadmap.
The immersive user experience will be discussed at AutoSens #InCabin, to be held from March 15-17 in Scottsdale, AZ. The conference will include a panel session called “Imagining the Immersive User Experience,” featuring Prateek Kathpal, #CTO of Cerence, Colin Barnden, principal analyst at Semicast, and moderated by Junko Yoshida, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Ojo-Yoshida Report.
