The world is full of talk about self-driving cars, but even those cars touted as "full self-driving" are anything but. A truly autonomous car is one that can travel from point to point without the need for driver intervention. So far, that goal has eluded automakers, but it's getting closer to reality.

Mercedes Chief Technology Officer Markus Schäfer recently told Automotive News that Level 4 autonomy is "doable" by 2030.

"Private-owned Level 4 cars, absolutely. This is something that I see in the future," Schäfer told Automotive News at a Sunnyvale, California media event.

SAE International, an automotive industry group tasked with setting engineering standards, rates a vehicle's ability to travel autonomously on a scale of zero to five. At Level 0 are vehicles with no autonomous features. A Level 1 vehicle has a single feature, such as cruise control, to manage its speed.

Vehicles with Level 2 driving automation use multiple systems to manage steering, acceleration and braking, but must have a human in the loop who can quickly take over. GM's Super Cruise and Tesla's Full Self-Driving are examples of Level 2 systems.

Research firm Guidehouse Insights regularly ranks companies developing automated driving tech.

Tesla didn't make this year's top 10, and ranked last of 16 companies assessed.

That's despite CEO Elon Musk's confidence in his Full Self-Driving tech.

Moreover, of the 16 companies recently ranked by research and consulting firm Guidehouse Insights (which ranks some of the biggest names working on automated-driving technology each year), Tesla came in last. Tesla ranked last in similar lists in 2021 and 2020.

This year, Guidehouse specifically focused on ranking companies developing this tech for light- to medium-duty vehicles, rather than the automakers that might eventually deploy it in their cars.

The list comes at a particularly volatile time for the self-driving industry, which has faced a number of headwinds over the past year, including waning investor interest, less available funding, and technological challenges. As such, many companies have struggled.
CEO Elon Musk has promised autonomous vehicles for the better part of a decade. Tesla raised the cost of its Full Self-Driving package to $15,000 despite still requiring driver supervision, and the Society of Automotive Engineers, which established the industry-standard levels of autonomy, only classifies it as a Level 2 — comparable to systems like Ford's BlueCruise and GM's Super Cruise.

Ford BlueCruise and Lincoln ActiveGlide – FoMoCo’s hands-free highway driver assist features – have proven to be quite popular from the day both launched, steadily accumulating more and more users who have racked up a considerable number of miles with the feature activated thus far. In fact, back in November, the number of Ford owners enrolled in one of these services surpassed the 100,000 mark, and that number grew to 114,000 users one month later who have cumulatively covered 42 million miles. Now, according to CEO Jim Farley, Ford owners enrolled in one of these two programs have reached yet another milestone.

The latest developments for Ford's self-driving features were recently unveiled by the company to be under its new project called the "Latitude AI." It will deliver an autonomous driving capability that no longer relies on the vehicle's in-cabin sensors that detect if a person is paying attention or looking at the roads, as it would drive without human intervention.

It would soon replace the company's present technology for autonomous driving called the Ford BlueCruise, a feature that requires driver attention whenever using the tech.
