The members of the EU Regulatory Committee on Driver Distraction include organizations such as the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the Automobile Suppliers Association (CLEPA), the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and similar industry organizations. SaverOne became an observer and permanent participant in the committee, along with leading vehicle manufacturers which include Volvo Cars and Stellantis, a corporation that unites Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen, Jeep and twelve other brands.

SaverOne will have the opportunity to contribute its strong expertise and insights to help shape the future of in-vehicle technology, to reduce driver distractions and better protect vulnerable road users. The EU Regulatory Committee on Driver Distraction aims to promote regulations that oblige OEMs that launch new vehicle models in the EU starting from July 2024 to integrate solutions into the vehicle systems that will tackle driver distraction. From July 2026, the integration of driver distraction systems will become a requirement for all new vehicles sold in the EU.

DMS for safety
DMS technology uses sensors and cameras to monitor driver behavior, and alert them if they become distracted or drowsy. The system can detect when the driver's eyes are off the road, their head is nodding or their posture indicates drowsiness and can also detect if the driver is using a phone or engaged in any other activity that takes their attention away from driving.

Many drivers might balk at the idea of their car watching them to see if they make mistakes, and while they wouldn’t opt-in to the function of their own volition, recent advancements in regulation may prevent them from making that choice for themselves.

“As a driver, I know when I'm bad. I don't need anyone to tell me when I'm bad. And I wouldn't necessarily pay for a system that tells me when I choose to be bad,” said Tal Krzypow, VP Product at Cipia. “What has really been pushing the market and causing adoption is that it's not a decision by drivers for drivers. This is a regulatory decision that has already been made.”

DMS for cool stuff
While vehicle safety is DMS’ primary use case, it also opens up a host of opportunities for quality of life and driver convenience features.

One of the most apparent examples is made possible by facial recognition technology, which Krzypow explained can be used by manufacturers to keep track of who’s driving the car and make an automatic adjustment to suit that user’s preferences.

“You can personalize anything: from seating positions to mirror positions to volume level, even temperature level,” he said, noting that even more scenarios are made possible by DMS’ ability to detect other vehicle occupants.

Such possible scenarios implemented by manufacturers in the future might include turning off the AC on your wife’s side when she gets in the car, moving your tall friend’s seat back so that your view of the side mirror isn’t blocked by his knees or blasting hype music on your way to your daughter’s Judo class.

Nearly 200 more banks may be vulnerable to the same type of risk that took down Silicon Valley Bank: The value of the assets they hold.

There are 186 banks across the country that could fail if half of their depositors quickly withdraw their funds, a new study published on the Social Science Research Network found.

Even insured depositors — those with $250,000 or less in the bank — could have problems getting their cash if these institutions face the sort of run that Silicon Valley saw a week ago.

The concern is that these banks hold a significant amount of their assets in interest-rate sensitive financial instruments like government bonds and mortgage backed securities. The value of those older, low-interest investments dropped sharply as the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates over the past year.

Duggal added that the industry as a whole is headed more toward driver-assistance technology and not so much toward self-driving vehicles.

“A feature that automakers are starting to introduce is monitoring of the driver: Is the driver distracted? Is the driver drowsy? Is he impaired in any way? Can the driver take over and bring the vehicle to a halt carefully?”

Duggal said that the concept car showcases how an automaker could have a more personal relationship with the driver and allow certain transportation and delivery companies to have better management of their vehicles. He added that Qualcomm is proud to represent San Diego as the company enters the auto industry via an existing international network of partners and customers. Not as automakers, to be clear, but as drivers of technology merging more and more into future vehicles.

“What we are doing here is affecting the global automotive ecosystem," Duggal said. "We are now participating, really, across the world."

Now, to be clear, Qualcomm is not becoming an automaker itself, but, rather, it will sell its system to automakers, which would include it in future vehicles they design and manufacture.

Cadillac rolled out some of Qualcomm's technology in its 2023 Lyriq. At least seven other automakers have signed on to incorporate the full chassis or certain components of it into future models.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and touchscreen are functional but cluttered. Nissan's ProPilot Assist 2.0 system is a big step up for this brand, but not for driver-assist tech as a whole. For example, while it does allow for hands-free highway driving, it doesn't work in heavy rain like General Motors' Super Cruise.

Cadillac XT4 sales increased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico during the fourth quarter of 2022.

In the United States, Cadillac XT4 deliveries totaled 6,803 units in Q4 2022, an increase of about 123 percent compared to 3,046 units sold in Q4 2021.

During the complete 2022 calendar year, XT4 sales increased about 88 percent to 21,774 units.

Cadillac XT4 sales during the fourth quarter of 2022 placed the small luxury crossover in fourth place in its segment among 10 entries when ranked by sales volume. The Lexus NX remained at the top, as it has all year, with an 118 percent jump in sales to 17,351 units. The Buick Envision (see running Buick Envision sales), the XT4’s corporate cousin and E2 platform mate, placed second with a 17 percent decline to 7,663 units. The Lincoln Corsair (see running Lincoln Corsair sales) placed third with 31 percent jump to 7,591 units, and the Cadillac XT4 took fourth with a segment-best 123 percent leap to 6,803 units. The Audi Q3 dropped two spots to fifth with a 16 percent slide to 6,442 units.

The two entries from Mercedes-Benz, the GLB-Class and GLA-Class, placed sixth and seventh, respectively. The GLB-Class posted a 56 percent bump to 5,924 units while the GLA-Class had an 111 percent jump to 5,517 units. The Acura RDX followed in eighth with a 61 percent decline to 5,013 units. The two entries from BMW, the X1 and X2, rounded out the list, placing ninth and tenth, respectively. The X1 posted a 42 percent slide to 2,744 units while the X2 posted an 81 percent drop to 330 units.

Elon Musk has teased the idea that Tesla would sell a widely affordable battery-powered model since 2006. He finally came close to announcing one this month, but still hasn’t shared details. Competitors, including Volkswagen and General Motors, aren’t waiting to see what the mercurial billionaire decides to do and are already laying down plans for EVs priced at $30,000 or less.

European auto giant Volkswagen on Wednesday said it’s readying the 25,000 euro ($26,400) ID. 2ALL, a compact hatchback, along with nine other new electric vehicles for sale by 2026. GM, which already has the Bolt, the top-selling EV in the U.S. priced below $30,000, is adding an electric version of the Chevrolet Equinox this year, starting at $30,000. Fisker Inc., which is preparing to start delivering electric Ocean SUVs in the coming weeks, plans to add the Pear, a small crossover with a $29,900 base price, in 2024.

By comparison, the cheapest Tesla, an entry-level Model 3 sedan, costs $43,000 before taxes—even after the carmaker recently slashed thousands of dollars off the sticker price to help it qualify for a new federal tax credit. The absence of a relatively inexpensive vehicle isn’t much of a problem for Tesla, though such models are vital to expanding the overall EV market in the years ahead, says Ed Kim, president of industry researcher AutoPacific.

Driver-monitoring systems are making their way into vehicles not just because automakers need them to enable automated wizardry but because they’re facing increasing pressure from regulators and safety groups in Europe and the US.

All new car models sold in Europe will have to have driver-monitoring systems by mid-decade, even if they don’t come with partially automated features. And new vehicles sold in Europe with advanced driver-assistance features already have to include driver-monitoring systems to receive a coveted five-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme, a government-funded vehicle safety organization. “We want to get those systems into all the vehicles in Europe quicker than regulation will do,” says Richard Schram, the technical director of the group. The US infrastructure bill, passed in 2021, requires the Department of Transportation to conduct research on the effectiveness of driver-monitoring systems, potentially a first step toward requiring them in new vehicles.

In the US, federal data shows that distracted and drowsy driving was responsible for less than 10 percent of the 38,824 highway deaths in 2020, the last year with complete data. But safety groups argue that the share caused by distraction is much higher, because federal crash data often depends on observations at the scenes of crashes.
In most cases, driver-monitoring systems use an infrared camera or cameras on a car’s dash, steering wheel, or rearview mirror. Instead of streaming imagery to the cloud like a cellphone, they process imagery using software inside the car to track head, eye, or hand movements. Those systems have been trained on millions of images of real and synthetic people behind the wheel, their makers say, and can determine whether a driver is looking at the road ahead—or at the cellphone on their lap.

Depending on the automaker, a system that senses that the driver isn’t paying enough attention when using an automated driving feature might flash a warning, change the color of internal lights on the dashboard or steering wheel, sound an alert, buzz the steering wheel, or some combination of all those tactics. If the driver doesn’t respond, the system will trigger the car to slowly come to a stop.

The system really proved its worth when we needed to change settings on the big infotainment screen or take a sip of our drink. Per our stopwatch, the driver monitoring camera behind the steering wheel would give you five seconds of eyes-off-the-road time before yelling at you to watch the road, which was more than enough to change the radio or climate settings. A number of navigation functions remain locked out while the vehicle is in motion, but Ford's voice control feature worked so well at recognizing natural language that we didn't mind using it to enter a destination or search for a specific roadside restaurant.

We did appreciate that when BlueCruise needed to disengage hands-free mode, steering assistance and lane centering stayed on. This meant that if the vehicle was in the middle of a turn when it needed to switch to hands-on mode, it would keep turning itself until, and after, we took over.

In the event you're distracted and don't take over immediately, the car will keep steering itself as it ratchets up the notifications. First, it's just dinging sounds and messages on the instrument cluster, but if that doesn't work, it'll start tapping the brakes to shake you to attention. Ignore those and it'll eventually slow the car to a gradual stop in the lane with the emergency flashers on. Why not pull to the shoulder (if there is one)? Most cars don't have the sensors needed to determine whether the shoulder is safe to drive on. The only thing we'd add is increasing warning volume, like GM has.

“It’s much bigger than the data show,” said Bruce Landsberg, vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board. Data collection methods are so riddled with problems, he said, that reliable estimates are difficult if not impossible.

As time goes on iam sure things will show that it makes it easier to integrate SEE DMS/OMS but on a contract like the Cipia one then its no good if we not even quoting.
