From July 2024*, all new trucks sold in the EU must comply with the updated General Safety Regulations (GSR). The regulations require a range of mandatory advanced safety features. What are they and how will they impact your transport business?


In 2019, the GSR were updated as a result of new innovations in automotive safety that can help lower the risk of accidents caused by human error. The update means a series of active safety systems that support drivers will become mandatory in new trucks from July 2024.


The objective is to help the EU reach ’Vision Zero’ – its long-term goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries on European roads by 2050.


The active safety features largely focus on keeping drivers attentive and alert. Some of them are already in place in some form in many trucks today.

What are the General Safety Regulations for heavy trucks?
A total of 11 active safety features are required. Eight of them will become mandatory on new trucks from July 2024. The remaining three will follow in 2026 and 2029. The features include:

1. Emergency stop signal: A flashing brake light (or similar) that signals to other road users behind the truck that the truck is quickly slowing down or braking heavily.

2. Reversing information: Technology, such as camera or sensors, to give the driver an overview of objects and people behind the truck.

3. Tyre pressure monitoring system: A system that monitors the tyre pressure and reports tyre pressure loss in real time to the driver.

4. Intelligent speed assistance: A system that actively monitors speed and alerts the drivers if he/she is breaking the speed limit, to encourage them to slow down.

5. Blind spot information system: A system that warns the driver of cyclists riding adjacent or crossing in front.

6. Moving off information system: A system that warns the driver of vulnerable road users in front of the vehicle before driving off or when driving slowly.

7. Alcohol interlock installation facilitation: The rule change requires a standardised interface for alcoholic interlocks (breathalysers) in vehicles.

8. Drowsiness and attention detection: Safety systems to assess the driver’s alertness that for instance monitor how long somebody has been driving and warn the driver to take a break when needed.

9. Distraction recognition and prevention: A safety warning system capable of recognising the level of attention a driver is paying to a situation and warning the driver, if necessary. Set to roll out in a later phase in 2026.

10. Improved direct vision from driver’s position: Specific requirements to improve “direct vision” (what drivers can see directly through the windows of their vehicle) and remove blind spots. The new standards aim to allow drivers to see cyclists and pedestrians faster and easier. Set to roll out in a later phase in 2029.

11. Event (accident) data recorder: A “black box” accident data recorder

Gets to us all waiting and waiting. I dont want to be handing down the shares in my will thats for sure. Its certainly time to deliver some of the the huff and puff.

Iam pretty hopeful next few months will see something good happen. Numbers via TPIs should start climbing nicely. Merc & BMW must start SOP or started on top of what we got SOP already. GM still got about 7 launches this Year. We may have lost a couple of models via dual sourcing but if end up with 20 models with GM that be fine.

Gen 3 should be good and fleet should start really stepping up soon.

But i agree news is well overdue but Magna are no mugs. Martin Ive was a CFO of a A$5b company and moved from them to us. Like Mo Salah moving to Doncaster Rovers that one. He cant be on as good package but there must be a reason he moved & a bigger reason why spending £400-500k on SEE shares.

Lombard bought 7.5m more shares in March so sure everyone not stupid.

According to the statistics, in 2022 smart cars in China were installed with 7.005 million ****pit SoCs, a year-on-year upsurge of 44.9%, of which Qualcomm's ****pit SoCs boasted the highest installation, up to 3.039 million units, or 43.4% of the total.

In 2022, described as the first year in which Qualcomm SA8155P started production and was mounted on cars, both emerging carmakers (NIO, Xpeng, Neta, Weltmeister, etc.) and conventional automakers (BMW, Ford China, GM, Great Wall, GAC, Geely, Chery, etc.) spawned car models with Qualcomm 8155 chips. Even it was proposed that the chips of NIO, ZEEKR 001, Ford Mach-E, Voyah FREE and other models were upgraded to Qualcomm 8155 for old customers to make them more satisfied.

Qualcomm's next-generation ****pit SoC SA8295P is also production-ready. At present, multiple suppliers such as Bosch, Desay SV, Thundersoft and PATEO have begun to create ****pit solutions based on Qualcomm 8295 so as to answer the needs of the fast-growing smart car market; Jidu's first model carrying this chip was announced to be mass-produced in 2023. It is known that some models of Great Wall, GAC and Xiaomi among others will also be equipped with this chip.

There is no doubt that Qualcomm has made a great success in the ****pit field, and its chips have even become a selling point for smart cars. The blue ocean market ****pit SoC becomes another arena following mobile phone SoC, having attracted quite a few chip vendors to set foot in. As well as Qualcomm, players also include international giants like MediaTek, Samsung and Nvidia, Chinese startups such as SemiDrive and SiEngine, and non-automotive chip vendor AMD.

As a controls system engineer, Katie Sloman works on everything from standard driver assistance features to GM’s available Super Cruise™ hands-free driver assistance technology for compatible roads.† Last year, GM announced plans to double the Super Cruise road network to more than 400,000 miles of roads in the United States and Canada for select Chevy vehicles,† including some famous stretches like Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway, the Overseas Highway, and the Trans-Canada Highway.

Q: What was the first big project you worked on when you joined General Motors?

A: It was our first version of Super Cruise, when I joined in 2017. We were just launching it on the 2018 Cadillac CT6. I got to help with field service — troubleshooting issues and getting customers back into their cars as soon as possible.

A: With Super Cruise, I became very comfortable really early on. Being in Canada and coming down to the U.S. for some work trips, I got to use Super Cruise for five-hour drives, and it’s amazing how much more refreshed you feel after you’ve used that feature.

Q: How did you become interested in engineering?
A: I knew I was interested in science and math and didn’t want to be stuck in a lab, so I thought, OK, engineering sounds interesting. I ended up doing chemical engineering, and through Queen’s University in Canada, I got involved with a design team doing fuel cell technology. We had a golf cart that we modified to use a fuel cell and batteries.

Q: Is that what led you to working in the auto industry?
A: GM came to campus and gave a presentation on what their next few years were going to look like — how they’re going to tackle electric vehicles, fuel cells, and autonomous vehicles. I listened to that presentation and thought, wow, automotive is going to be a really neat area over the next 20 years.

Pharmaceuticals set up different companies or brands so the 1c cost tablet can be sold for $2 in USA & Europe but 25c in Africa & some Asian countries. Otherwise they don’t get a sniff where it’s price sensitive.

yeah, I don't think retail investors understand Seeing Machines (LON:SEE) or actually how much of a moat it has built itself over the last few years. They only see a loss making, jam tomorrow share and as a long duration asset is under pressure. I get that - I felt much the same way until I listened much more carefully to what is going on.

The directors obviously understand it much better and they see where they are in the process and how much value will be created in the future. The broker thinks it is worth 21p which is about 4* current prices not that I pay much attention to broker targets.

They are debt free with lots of net cash and business plan is fully funded, so no real risk to the balance sheet or shareholder dilution. There is also an under appreciation by retail investors of the product which is heavily IP protected, will be mandated in most vehicles (cars, lorries, mining equipment, planes, trains) either now or in the coming few years and there are few credible competitors. Their main rival in the automobile space is winning about 30% of new RFPs by volume whereas Seeing Machines (LON:SEE) is winning 70%. I think that tells you which is better. Nonetheless even at a 50% market share the annual volumes will be enormous. The moat comes about because as we all know, to embed the tech into a new model of car is 7-10 years. Seeing Machines (LON:SEE) have been in this process for the last decade so whilst cars are now rolling off the production line with Seeing Machines (LON:SEE) technology embedded in the hundreds of thousands no-one is going to suddenly steal this business away. It's yours for the life of the model. In Europe to get a 4 or 5* NCAP rating you now have to have this driver tech included as standard so it is becoming regulatory mandated. They have years worth of data from their Guardian product (in mining machinery) to show it works, so from a car manufacturer perspective you will always buy this ahead of something newer or inferior for the simple reason of avoiding recalls or fines if it fails. The same will be true for the aviation industry where regulation will be even tighter. These are the reasons you will never have a cheap iPhone camera replacement as someone suggested.

Anyway - investors don't care at the moment, which is why the directors are loading up. They expect to make a lot of money over the next 5 years whereas retail is all about the next 5 minutes.
