Munich / Shanghai. The BMW Group is making a strong showing at Auto Shanghai 2023 with a total of three world premieres from its BMW brand. Taking centre stage are the latest product and technological innovations, with the focus placed firmly on electrification and digitalisation.

This is the first time that only electrified new models from the brand are being exhibited at a show. The star attractions are the all-electric BMW i7 M70 xDrive (electric power consumption combined: 23.8 – 20.8 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) as the new range-topping model of the BMW 7 Series, the BMW XM Label Red (fuel consumption combined: 1.7 – 1.6 litres/100 km [166.2 – 176.6 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 34.5 – 33.0 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 39 – 35 g/km in the WLTP cycle) with M HYBRID drive system, and a version of the purely electrically powered BMW iX1 (electric power consumption combined: 18.1 – 16.8 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) that has been developed exclusively for Chinese customers. Also on display at Auto Shanghai 2023 are the BMW i Vision Dee and the MINI Concept Aceman, which are both receiving their Asian premieres.

The premium manufacturer is also making it very clear that the Chinese car market holds great importance for BMW by unveiling three new models from the brand in public for the first time at Auto Shanghai. “BMW stands for innovation, for cutting-edge products and a broad technology approach,” says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “This enables us to address the individual wishes of our customers, especially here in China.”

From 18–27 April, 2023, BMW will be offering visitors to the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai a wide-ranging show experience. In the exhibition area inside Hall 7.1, the entire portfolio of electrified models from the BMW brand are arranged around the show stand’s hub, which is designed in the style of a charging station. There is also an electrifying lighting installation as well as numerous interactive elements to draw visitors’ attention to the exhilarating product and brand experience on offer.

The arrival of Ford’s new BlueCruise – the first legal hands-free driving product available on UK roads – raises a whole series of issues that fleets need to be ready to deal with, warns FleetCheck.

The technology operates on approved Blue Zone sections of motorway at speeds up to 80mph

The “hands-off, eyes-on” self-driving technology was greenlit for use in Britain earlier this month and allows drivers on approved Blue Zone sections of motorway to drive with their hands off the steering wheel if they continue to pay attention to the road ahead, operating at up to 80mph (130km/h).

Peter Golding, managing director at the fleet software specialist, said that while the fleet industry has been discussing the subject of hands-free driving for some time, the real-world availability of BlueCruise brings everything into immediate and sharp relief.

“Probably the first question it raises is a really fundamental one – do fleets feel that it is safe for their drivers to be using the technology? Obviously, it has been officially signed off and Ford say that millions of miles have been safely covered, but do employers feel those assurances are sufficient for what remains quite a fundamental shift in driving practice?

“Certainly, allowing its use on your fleet would mean that it needed to be incorporated into your risk management policy and that drivers understand how and when it can be used. This is a legitimate criticism that is sometimes levelled at less sophisticated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, that drivers are not given sufficient information about how to integrate devices into their day-to-day driving while also recognising their limitations.

“With BlueCruise, there appears to be a high level of safeguarding built in, with the driver being monitored to ensure they are paying attention to the road, but fleets providing vehicles still need to ensure they have a high degree of understanding when using the technology.”

Golding also raised the issue of who pays for the technology, which is being sold on a subscription basis on £17.99 per month to drivers of the Mustang Mach E electric car.

“Does the company feel that £17.99 per month is worth spending to reduce stress on motorway driving and even potentially improve safety? If the driver wants to pay, do you as an employer feel that this is appropriate? These all need consideration.”

Golding added that other hands-free subscription devices are likely to follow, putting greater pressure on fleets to answer all of these questions.

“There is potentially even an argument for fleets to write a short policy document covering this area. It is something that will only see further increases in sophistication in the future.”

Ford said it would begin exporting its F-150 Lightning pickup to Norway, which it called "the world's most advanced electric vehicle market." The automaker said the plan was spurred by voracious consumer demand in Norway, where EVs accounted for 80% of new-vehicle sales last year.

SHELL were one of 4 oil companies in the trial from memory. Total are doing theirs & the others will follow or following. Legislation hasn’t happened yet but is about to.
All those telematics companies will need a supplier of ZdMS & Gen 3 should see us right up there in as a top supplier.

Dual sourcing will take place for many OEMs & we will win some & loose some. Prices can be tweaked if have more features when selling software. Must be $600-700m still to be announced from that $1b

Fleet stock of Guardian units back in from late Dec. Mobileye signed up with Geotab and Gen 3 units coming any month now.

Seeing Machines

The vast majority of UK investors are unlikely to know about Australia-based minnow Seeing Machines. However, this could be set to change as it rapidly becomes the biggest player in software and systems designed to monitor driver distraction and fatigue and, in doing so, reduce accidents on the road.

Although only currently available on the premium models, this tech is likely to become standard over time in accordance with legislation. Seeing Machines also makes money from having its Guardian tech fitted retrospectively to fleets.

But Seeing’s eye-tracking tech isn’t just limited to cars and trucks. The company also has its fingers in multiple pies including aviation and rail. This could further turbocharge growth in the years ahead.

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr. 17, 2023-- Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) announced today that it has developed a technology to detect serious physical conditions experienced by people driving automobiles, such as loss of consciousness, by estimating pulse rate, changes in blood pressure and other biometric data collected with a contactless Driver Monitoring System (DMS) camera, which the company has already launched to detect driver distractions and drowsiness. The new system uses Mitsubishi Electric's proprietary AI to estimate biometric data and proprietary Maisart® AI technology in order to detect abnormal physical conditions even when the driver's posture basically does not change.

In Japan, heart disease, epilepsy and cerebrovascular disease are the top three medical causes of car accidents that frequently result in death or serious injury. Existing on-board technologies use a DMS camera to detect abnormal posture due to sudden illness, but it is believed that about 50% of the drivers who lose consciousness remain in an upright driving position without any noticeable change in posture, thus requiring a different method of detection.

Mitsubishi Electric has been working to develop a detection technology based on changes in biometric data that occur when drivers experience certain types of physical emergencies. The company's new technology focuses on physical changes that are typically caused by heart disease, epilepsy and cerebrovascular disease, using a proprietary AI to estimate biometric data such as pulse rate, pulse interval, pulse intensity and changes in blood pressure collected from the driver using a contactless DMS camera.

Lincoln doesn’t have an airy brand-specific name for its hands-free driving system. They use the same BlueCruise moniker as Ford. The Nautilus packs version 1.2, which — like GM’s Super Cruise — includes hands-free lane changes. We tested it on the Mustang Mach E GT earlier this year and were impressed.

General Motors and SAIC have had phenomenal success with Buick, easily GM’s biggest brand in the world’s largest market. And while not every model has been a hit, the partners keep adding new ones while culling the slow-sellers. Next comes a line-up of EVs, each of which will be called Electra.

Boasting arresting looks, the 2024 Celestiq features four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, a 111 kWh battery and in excess of 600 hp with a torque output of more than 640 lb ft. Given the heft of its other Ultium-branded EVs, perhaps it’s not surprising that the car’s mass is yet to be communicated. In this case, the platform is BEV3.

The new Caddy will also feature GM’s so-called ‘Ultra Cruise’. Compared to ‘Super Cruise’, a level 2 system, what sounds like Level 3 AD will allow a driver “…to travel truly hands-free…across nearly every road including city streets, subdivision streets and paved rural roads, in addition to highways,” the company asserts.

Interviewed in December 2022, the car’s chief engineer stated that the Celestiq would not be available with right-hand drive. Nonetheless, Tony Roma mentioned both Japan and Britain among export destinations.
