JT Griffin showed how the Seeing Machines Driver Monitoring system works.

A driver monitoring system is designed to detect what the driver is doing and where the driver is looking. It detects if their eyes are on the road and if they are looking at other parts in the vehicle cabin. Then the system is designed to intervene or to create a warning if dangerous conditions are detected, says Griffin.

Seeing Machines cameras detect eye gazes. The system can also tell if a person is smoking, wearing a seatbelt and if the driver is alert. Driver Monitoring can work well with ADAS systems.

"We believe that ADAS systems are made better and more robust when it is included with a driver monitoring system," says Griffin.

Griffin gave the example of automatic emergency braking, with Driver Monitoring the car can detect whether or not drivers are engaged. The car can break sooner or can break later, depending on the best practice. Based on the driver paying attention, the system can be more sensitive or lenient.

He noted that the European NCAP will be requiring driver monitoring and says, "I feel it is my duty as the representative of the industry to push for international harmonization. Of course, manufacturers love harmonizing."

Mercedes-Benz Group (MBGn.DE) sales rose moderately in the first quarter of the year, boosted by electric vehicles (EV) and premium cars, the German carmaker said on Wednesday.

Worldwide sales increased 3% to 503,500 vehicles, with Europe posting the strongest growth at 8%.

Lastly, BMW states that it has bolstered its ADAS technology on the i5 using high-resolution cameras, high-precision radar sensors, and refined software. The result is an optional Driving Assistance Professional Package that includes Highway Assistant, which allows for hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph and now includes Active Lane Change with driver monitoring.
The system will suggest the lane change, and the driver can activate the movement by peering at the side mirror. The driver can also flip their turn signal to initiate the lane change.

I ended up in the traffic the next day, and the vehicle's hands-free traffic assistance meant I could sit with my hands in my lap while keeping a sharp eye on everything around me. As always, here's a reminder that you cannot buy a self-driving car in the United States right now, and you have to pay attention to the road.

That said, BMW's driver-assistance system continues to impress. While not as good as Super Cruise or Mercedes' offering, on a long drive where you have to travel through a dense urban area with a ton of traffic, it helps.

A few months back, Cadillac Society reported exclusive details regarding the next-gen Cadillac CT6. We then spotted a few prototypes undergoing testing, and later, some photos were leaked from within the Jinquiao Cadillac China plant where the luxury sedan will be built. Now, we’ve spotted the second-gen CT6 completely uncovered, undergoing testing on U.S. roads.

The second-gen CT6 will utilize Cadillac’s Global B electrical architecture, which will allow the luxury sedan to harness the latest versions of Super Cruise and its eventual successor, Ultra Cruise. General Motors revealed the refreshed 2024 Cadillac XT4 last February, pulling the sheets on a long list of updates and changes. One of the big updates was the announcement that the Cadillac XT4 would offer the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system at an unspecified later date. Now, GM Authority photographers have caught what appears to be a 2024 Cadillac XT4 testing with Super Cruise activated.
As we can see from these photos, this vehicle is an example of the refreshed 2024 Cadillac XT4, seemingly in the Premium Luxury trim level. Although we’re unable to clearly see the steering wheel, which would provide us with an indication of whether or not this vehicle was running Super Cruise thanks to an illuminated green strip along the upper rim, the driver does not appear to have their hands on the steering wheel.

The rumor mills are swirling surrounding the future for some of GM’s most beloved nameplates. There have already been murmurs that a Corvette SUV or Corvette sedan could be coming to add to the Vette’s growing lineup, which now includes the all-wheel-drive hybrid E-Ray and ridiculous, 1,000 horsepower Zora. And the Corvette isn’t alone. On the heels of GM announcing production is ceasing on the sixth-generation Camaro in 2024, there are plenty of rumors the Camaro is slated to get the SUV treatment.
In 2020, GM announced it would introduce 30 EVs by 2025, and the automaker looks on their way to achieving that goal. In 2024, the Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Sierra/Silverado EV, and Cadillac Celestiq will join the Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq and existing GM EVs. A Camaro SUV would, of course, add to that tally.
We’re not expecting any potential Camaro SUV to sport the 38-inch, curved OLED display you can find in the 2023 Cadillac Escalade, but it’s easy to surmise GM will offer trim levels with plenty of its cutting-edge tech, or even make them standard to set a Camaro SUV apart. Rail Attention and Alertness Monitoring Trial – T1193
After the tragic Croydon Trams Sandilands tram accident in 2016 in which driver fatigue was implicated, the ORR highlighted that the Rail Industry need to invest more research capacity in understanding how to manage driver attention and alertness issues more successfully.
Croydon Trams implemented attention and alertness monitoring technology after this accident and have noticed a 75% reduction in fatigue related events, a 40% reduction in the number of collisions arising from driver distraction, alongside a 316% increase in driver incident reporting – these are significantly positive safety benefits.
The T1193 project will work with three Rail companies (c2c, DB Cargo and LNER) to trial the use of a similar alertness and attention safety monitoring device located inside train cabs. We are excited to understand what sorts of safety benefits may be achieved while using this technology and anticipate that there will be systemic improvements to the way that attention and alertness issues are managed for train drivers.
We are working closely with the three Rail companies and their Trade Union representatives to ensure that we meet the needs of companies and drivers in trialling this technology. We are still developing the trial plan details and will provide regular project updates. We hope to start the monitoring trial in Summer 2023.
What does the device do?
• The device works by monitoring the driver’s facial features and detects alertness behaviours related to fatigue (e.g., yawning, long eye blinking and microsleeping) and distraction related behaviours (e.g., looking away from the line for a long period of time). [The exact device to be used is still being chosen].
• There will be an audible and physical alert for an alertness event (e.g., an audible alarm and a seat shaker) and a different audible alert for a distraction event. These will be distinct from other alerts in the cab.
• The device is not connected to other safety features of the train and will not prevent train use if it is not working.
• Drivers won’t need to make any adjustments to the device, it will work automatically when the train moves.
• It is not a CCTV device and is not constantly recording. It will only capture a snippet of video if a safety event occurs (e.g., a microsleep). You can see an example of this kind of snippet here:

• There are stringent safeguards about who can access data from the recording device – drivers will have access to their own safety data if desired.
• We are working with the three companies to determine a consistent approach if an alert is activated, and how they can be dealt with in a fair and just manner outside of any disciplinary procedures. We will collectively determine procedures to support drivers if they are not able to continue with their shift due to alertness or distraction safety events
