The new BMW 5 Series Sedan also raises the bar in its segment with its extensive array of systems for automated driving and parking. High-resolution cameras, high-precision radar sensors and control units from the BMW Group’s latest technology toolkit, plus a software application refined over countless miles of testing, provide the ingredients for an automated driving experience featuring innovative highlights that further enhance safety and comfort.

In the USA and Canada, and now also in Germany, the Driving Assistant Professional available as an option for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan comprises Highway Assistant, which can be used at speeds of up to 130 km/h (85 mph). Once activated, the system takes care of distance control and the steering inputs required for lane control, so the driver can keep their hands in a comfortable position and focus fully on surveying the area around the vehicle and the traffic situation at hand.

An interior camera helps monitor the driver’s level of alertness and also enables another innovation: in a world first, the automated lane change – included as part of the Driving Assistant Professional and Highway Assistant – in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan can be controlled using eye activation. This convenience feature results in a new level of interaction between human and car. Looking in the exterior mirror prompts the car to initiate the lane change process and carry out the necessary steering movements and speed adjustments at speeds of up to 130 km/h (85 mph) once the driver has confirmed they want it to do so and the traffic situation allows. The purely visual gesture complements the previous use of the turn signal lever, which is also available as an alternative.

The share of EVs in total car sales globally jumped from 9% in 2021 to 14% in 2022, more than 10 times their share in 2017, according to the International Energy Agency’s new EV report, released today.

The IEA’s “Global EV Outlook 2023” reports that electric car sales grew, despite a shrinking global car market. Electric car sales – that’s battery electric and plug-in hybrids – exceeded 10 million in 2022, up 55% compared to 2021.

The IEA’s report states in the “Trends in electric light-duty vehicles” section:

In the course of just five years, from 2017 to 2022, EV sales jumped from around 1 million to more than 10 million. It previously took five years from 2012 to 2017 for EV sales to grow from 100,000 to 1 million, underscoring the exponential nature of EV sales growth.

BREAKING: First known video footage of Android-based BMW Group #iDrive9, as posted by BMWBLOG. Understood to be coming first in the #X1 and #X2 models this year. BMW iDrive 8.5 is #Linux-based and together both versions will replace the short-lived #iDrive 8. All BMW, MINI CARS and Rolls-Royce models will move to the new iDrive systems in time.

The video introduces the look and feel of Google #Android-based #infotainment and #navigation in cars. The assumption is that iDrive9 runs on Qualcomm's third-generation #****pit #applications #processor, which is optimized to run the Android #OS.

We can expect a run of announcements from Qualcomm during this year, as many other automakers reach start-of-production using Qualcomm/Android for infotainment.

Seeing Machines is assumed to supply the #driver #monitoring #system #DMS for iDrive versions 8/8.5/9, replacing Smart Eye as the DMS provider to BMW.

Buick’s first electric SUV receives 8,000 orders in 10 days
The Electra E5 is not only the brand’s first electric SUV but also Buick’s first mass-produced EV on GM’s ultium platform.
We got our first glimpse of the electric SUV in November after documents released by the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology leaked documents containing images and specs.
Buick says the new vehicle adopts a brand-new electric vehicle design language called “new life” and is loaded with features such as VCS smart ****pit and GM’s next-gen Super Cruise ADAS technology.

Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson wouldn't make a prediction about a recession this year, but he forecast strong demand through December.

“Overall, April remains really strong for us,” he said. “So we're confident we'll be able to hit this higher guidance.”

GM already is seeing benefits from the buyouts, and Jacobson said a projected $1 billion annual savings also will help the company this year.

Although GM's average transaction price dropped slightly, prices remained strong as sales in the U.S., GM's most lucrative market, rose almost 18% during the quarter. The average price paid for a GM vehicle in the U.S. was $50,263, down $490 from a year ago.

“We will have a little bit of a challenge as we lap last year's pricing increases through this year,” Jacobson said, adding that new models GM is introducing should help with pricing and demand.

DETROIT — General Motors
on Tuesday raised key guidance for 2023 after reporting first-quarter results that topped Wall Street’s top- and bottom-line forecasts. Here’s how GM did, compared with what Wall Street expected based on average estimates compiled by Refinitiv:

Adjusted earnings per share: $2.21 vs. $1.73 expected
Revenue: $39.99 billion vs. $38.96 billion expected
For the full year, GM is raising its adjusted earnings expectations to a range of $11 billion to $13 billion, or $6.35 to $7.35 a share, up from a previous range of $10.5 billion to $12.5 billion, or between $6 and $7 a share. GM also raised expectations for adjusted automotive free cash flow to a range of $5.5 billion and $7.5 billion, up from an earlier forecast of $5 billion to $7 billion.

GM lowered its guidance, however, for net income attributable to stockholders due to $875 million in special charges related to a previously announced employee buyout program during the quarter. The new range is between $8.4 billion and $9.9 billion, down from $8.7 billion to $10.1 billion.

More electric vehicle (EV) choices means more buzz and reviews that hook you until you see the prices. But wait, there are some affordable EVs hitting the market.

The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, which was introduced last year, is bigger than the Bolt by a good six inches and has a starting price under $30,000. The 2018 Cadillac CT6 was the genesis of General Motor’s true hands-free highway driving technology. Three years later and Enhanced Super Cruise was introduced on the CT5 furthering the autonomy with automated lane changes. 10. It - unsurprisingly - has 'hands-free' driving tech
With Ford becoming the first car maker to bring hands-free 'assisted' driving features to UK roads last week, there's little surprise that the ID.7 packs a similar function for use on motorways.

Its latest update to 'Travel Assist' can activate at speeds in excess of 56mph only on multi-lane roads to control lane positioning and keep up and slow down with traffic ahead.

VW has also enhanced its existing assisted lane changing system, which on existing models can only activate on motorways when there is at least one visible lane boundary marking.

In the ID.7, this feature can now differentiate between a lane boundary and a kerb.

The fusion of the vehicle data with 'swarm data' of other vehicles is another new feature that allows the ID.7 to paint a picture of the traffic and roads up ahead, so it can slow down for bends, roundabouts and junctions without the driver's involvement.

While this suggests it has some form of self-driving functionality, VW makes clear that a driver must remain responsible for vehicle control and not take their eyes off the road when systems are active.

It's unclear how much of this tech can legally be used on UK roads currently.
