Even the OEMs are guessing on numbers.
Volkswagen's deliveries to customers rose 12% to 9.24 million vehicles in 2023.
The automaker joins rivals in warning of a challenging year. When Stellantis reported results last month, it predicted a "turbulent" 2024.
Volkswagen said on Wednesday it expected a boost to vehicle orders in Western Europe in the coming months from new models including fully electric ones.
The company, which recently launched the electric ID.7 and plans a record 30 more new models during 2024, said it had "started the new year with a clearly positive trend" compared with the start of last year.
The new EV launches come as demand growth for electric cars has been slowing. German rival Mercedes-Benz said last month it was delaying its electrification goal by five years and would keep revamping combustion-engine models.
When asked about demand for EVs, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume said they were "the future, period", but added: "we're flexible enough to adapt to changes in different markets".
1. New EVs not sure how market takes to them
2. Economic uncertainty
3. New models with no track record on annual sales
With alot of SEE in new EV models if you want a guarantee buy a toaster ;)

Seeing Machines Ltd (AIM:SEE, OTC:SEEMF) is on course to meet second-half-weighted full-year forecasts this year and profitability next following the release of interim results earlier on Monday, analysts say.
Driven by new rules mandating driver monitoring technology in cars from later this year, Seeing Machines should enjoy a solid end to the year, Stifel analysts noted on Monday.
Alongside this, "we think the company has a comfortable level of cash to reach run-rate profitability in 2025", the bank added, given the new regulatory rules and as shipments of its latest aftermarket driver monitoring system get underway.
“The opportunity for the company has never been as clear as it is today,” Stifel said, highlighting Seeing Machines’ US$22.2 million cash position.
“Investors should take advantage of the share price as it accelerates toward profitability,” the bank added, reiterating a share price target of 15p.
The most significant development to date in the evolution of #driver #monitoring #DMS and #cabin monitoring #CMS is the single optical path DMS+CMS system for #interiorsensing integrated into the Magna International #occupant monitoring #mirror. Seeing Machines has today confirmed that that program has now reached start of production #SoP.
As discussed in January, the "large German OEM" is assumed to be Volkswagen based on research at #CES where the #VW press conference featured an ID.7 and the latest generation Golf Mk 8.5, both clearly with the Magna occupant mirror installed. Specifically the program wins involved are assessed to be the MQB evo and MEB (ID #EV) platforms. The potential annual production volumes here are huge.
I experienced the performance of this product first hand at CES. That is me in the center of the picture below, taking the photograph during the Magna demonstration.
Integrating fully featured interior sensing (DMS+CMS) into a single optical path inside the rear-view mirror #RVM is such a significant technical development that this program win has been subject to endless speculation and misinformation within the #incabin industry about whether interior sensing for #GSR and #NCAP compliance is even possible from the RVM.
So important is the significance of the product that many #OEMs have paused and completely rethought their interior monitoring development plans, taking a "wait and see" approach to the first win. Today the product is confirmed at SoP and will be tested and scored by Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks soon enough. The outcome of those tests will be irrefutable and industry developments and design awards will inevitably go from there.
Magna isn't waiting and is so confident of the commercial success of the program that it already has a second generation product in development. The only other significant RVM player is Gentex, which showed at CES a dual-optical path solution, with #NFOV IR image sensor covering the driver located in the RVM chin, and a fish-eye IR sensor in the overhead console covering the cabin for body-pose estimation of all occupants.
Production for VW started in March, so only about one month of build will feature in the Q1 #KPIs that Seeing Machines will publish in May. The exciting numbers will come in August, with the Q2 KPIs featuring the full three month build.
A detailed article on the Magna RVM solution was published in The Ojo-Yoshida Report at: https://lnkd.in/e9fAEw3d

The Magna mirror was on show at CES in January.
I read somewhere it put the cat amongst the pigeons and OEMs are looking at all the options now. If it does what it says on the tin and is cost effective then surely will start selling well.
Seeing Machines Ltd (AIM:SEE, OTC:SEEMF) reported first-half results in line with guidance and announced that production has begun on its largest-ever contract, a US$82 million (£64.4 million) interior cabin monitoring program for a large German automotive manufacturer.
Underlying revenue growth in the six months to 31 December was up 28% to US$25.6 million compared to a year earlier, as flagged in a pre-close update.
When including one-off Magna Electronics exclusivity payments, reported revenue growth was 5%.
OEM revenue from Automotive and Aviation was US$11.4 million, down from US$14 million last time, though high margin-per-vehicle royalty revenue from automotive production increased 35% to US$4.2 million
Annualised recurring revenues were up 22% to US$14.5 million, while aftermarket (fleet and off-road) revenue increased 38% to US$14.3 million.
Seeing Machines penned a net loss of US$19.8 million compared to US$4.5 million a year earlier.
Development expenditure is expected to reduce in the second half.
Net operating cashflows improved to a net outflow of US$1.1 million from US$6.8 million, with the company stressing it maintained a disciplined focus on working capital management.
Cash of US$22.2 million was in the bank at the half-year stage, with a receivables and inventory balance of US$31.1 million with working capital unwind of $5-6 million expected in the second half.
Looking to the rest of the year, Seeing Machines has a typical weighting to the second half, and the board has retained its expectations that the full-year financial performance will be in line with consensus.
Chief executive Paul McGlone hailed the start of the cabin-sensing project with the German OEM client on schedule, stating: “We look forward to volume from the ramping up over the course of the next few quarters as production gets into full swing."

Thought was a good open, honest performance from the guys.
Despite Redeye keep saying VW delayed good to see it started earlier this month. With BMW ramping up from this month the next 3/4 TPIs should start growing nicely.
Qualcomm 1 win & still working together nice to see.

Driver fatigue was a likely factor in 10 times more car crash deaths than federal statistics indicate, according to a new study — but when it comes to systemic solutions to address the problem, policymakers are asleep at the wheel.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recently found that a stunning 17.6 percent of fatal crashes between 2017 and 2021 almost certainly involved a tired driver, based on an advanced statistical analysis of the 41 percent of motorists' whose fatigue status was marked "unknown" in official crash reports. And in many cases, that data was missing for a simple reason: no one survived to witness who was awake and who wasn't.
"Unfortunately, just because of the types of crashes drowsy driving tends to be implicated in, we often don’t have a driver we can interview," said William Horrey, technical director at the Foundation. "And as an extension of that, many times whoever is doing the investigation might not know the important cues and indicators that might indicate that drowsy driving was a factor; the reporting form doesn’t even give them tools they need to make that assessment."

Van Hool has partnered with Mobileye to integrate advanced safety features into the T series. The Shield+ range includes components such as Turning Assist, which alerts drivers to the presence of road users when making turns, and Pedestrian Collision Warning (PCW), which detects pedestrians in front of the vehicle and warns the driver. The Speed Limitation Indication recognizes speed limit signs and displays them on the dashboard, giving those high evidence. The Highway Monitoring Warning helps maintain a safe distance from preceding vehicles, and finally Turn Signal Reminder ensures that drivers are aware of their active turn signals. Furthermore, the Driver Drowsiness Indication system monitors driver fatigue, providing audible and visual alarms when necessary.

Lots of talk recently about dual optical path #driver #monitoring #DMS and cabin monitoring #CMS. It is important to understand this trend is not new, and the first vehicle to reach start of production #SOP in Europe with a dual optical path DMS+CMS configuration was the BMW Group #iX, back in 2021.
BMW has begun to expand DMS+CMS installation beyond the iX. Shown below is the 2025 MINI #Cooper #EV, with a DMS located just above the steering column and sited where the instrument cluster would traditionally be, and a CMS integrated into the overhead console #OHC. In BMW/MINI models, the DMS is judged to be supplied by Seeing Machines and the CMS by Xperi Inc. #DTSAutosense, now part of Tobii. Further research confirms the overall market leader for #automotive DMS is Seeing Machines, and for CMS is DTS Autosense (Tobii).
The need for two systems reflects two sets of protocol tests: a DMS to monitor the driver for #distraction, #drowsiness, and sudden sickness; and a CMS to monitor for seatbelt recognition #SBR and child presence detection #CPD. In future the CMS feature set may expand to include other convenience features such as driver and passenger ID, pet detection, and object detection.
Irrespective of the inevitable PR positioning already underway about "interior sensing," the long-term trend is towards single optical path DMS+CMS, or in other words to perform driver and cabin monitoring from a single #CMOS image sensor.
The challenge is where to site the single sensor: DMS is optimal from around the steering column and instrument cluster; CMS is optimal from the OHC. The problem is that each location for one severely compromises the performance of the other.
A solution that is emerging is to site the single sensor in (or on) the rear-view mirror (RVM). But that is technically very challenging, for example the mirror moves, there is an existing trend to full display mirrors (FDM), and thermal management in a confined space is a major issue. So locating a 940nm IR optical path with image processor inside the mirror and running algorithms that can meet the performance requirements for both DMS and CMS is a significant engineering problem.
Commercial factors also come into play. The RVM market is dominated by Gentex Corporation and Magna International. Gentex has proprietary DMS/CMS #algorithms from its purchase of Guardian Optical, and Magna is partnered with Seeing Machines.
JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover) will introduce hands-free, eyes-on driving in 2025 with the launch of the first model on the new electric EMA platform, understood to be the replacement for the Range Rover Velar.
Hands-free, eyes-on capability, known in the industry as level two-plus, is the final step towards autonomous driving, where the car fully takes over. Currently only the Ford Mustang Mach-E offers level two-plus in the UK, although BMW is poised to roll out the feature on new models such as the i5.
The capability for greater autonomy comes with JLR’s adoption of US tech specialist Nvidia’s Drive chip and software combination. The new Range Rover model, to be built in Halewood near Liverpool, is the first to use the new tech, a spokesperson told Autocar. They did not, however, confirm that this model is the Velar.

Car makers believe hands-free capability will become increasingly popular among customers, with many willing to pay monthly for the convenience. Ford charges £17.99 a month for BlueCruise level two-plus in the Mach-E, while BMW charges from £55 to download the hands-on upgrade Driving Assistant Plus.
JLR has also committed to offering level-three hands-off, eyes-off technology in the future. Tom Stringer, product strategy director, said: “I think for the modern luxury customer, level three will be a really important part.” He added that it is a “possibility” by the end of the decade.

Another model coming maybe?
The teched-up mule is equally mysterious. Keep in mind that Ford could be using this prototype as a testbed for just about anything (including projects completely unrelated to the Maverick itself), but considering how robustly this prototype has been up-fitted with various electronic gizmos, two things seem plausible. One is that this is a mule for Blue Cruise. Ford already packages Blue Cruise in CUVs built on this platform, so its inclusion on Maverick is not out of the question, however, even with a price tag approaching $40,000 loaded up, the little pickup seems an unlikely candidate for premium semi-self-driving tech.

Not long now :)
Starting July 7, 2024, every new car model manufactured in Europe is required to include a system capable of directly detecting drivers' distraction and drowsiness levels. This mandate comes under the European regulation known as "GSR2" ("General Safety Regulation 2").
Mandatory in Europe
This move is detailed in the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2590, established by the European Commission on July 13, 2023. According to the regulation, the system must alert drivers if their eyes deviate from the road for more than 3.5 seconds at speeds above 50km/h, and for more than 6 seconds when traveling between 20 and 50km/h.
This requirement applies regardless of the time of day, and the system must be effective even if the driver is wearing accessories such as caps, sunglasses, or false eyelashes.
Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) are not entirely new to the automotive industry, with certain vehicles having incorporated them since July 2022.
Beyond Safety: The Future of Driver Monitoring
Like the intelligent speed limiters which will also arrive this summer, this time on all new cars, this regulation is part of the ambition of zero deaths by 2050 on the roads of the European Union. According to French road safety, the first signs of drowsiness increase the risk of having an accident by 3 or 4.
In the summer of 2026, all new cars sold in Europe will have to carry these cameras.
In addition to promoting safety, the widespread adoption of these systems opens the door to innovative applications aimed at enhancing driver comfort.
"This type of system is capable of providing other information or detecting other elements such as the driver's emotions to offer music, adjust the interior ambiance, or to combine this information with the DMS. For example, depending on where the driver is looking, we can adjust the brightness of the screens to provide greater comfort or highlight important information," Ayla Vanden Driessche considers.
