Ford is the second best-selling electric vehicle brand in the United States this year, behind only Tesla, with sales figures going up 45% compared to last year's January-September period.

In the third quarter, the biggest gains were recorded by the F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup truck, which saw sales numbers more than double year over year. Ford sold 7,162 units of the Lightning in Q3 2024, up from the 3,503 units in Q3 of last year.

Year-to-date, Ford sold 22,807 F-150 Lightning EVs, an increase of 86% year-over-year, 35,626 Mustang Mach-Es (up 23.4%) and 9,256 E-Transit vans (up 67.4%).

Overall, Ford’s all-electric vehicle sales in the third quarter of this year amounted to 23,509 units, up 12.2% from last year’s 20,962 vehicles. Year-to-date, Ford sold 67,689 EVs, up 45% compared to last year’s 46,671 units.

By comparison, General Motors sold a little over 32,000 EVs in Q3 2024 in the United States. This means GM outsold Ford in the EV sector in the previous quarter, but Ford claims it outsold everybody but Tesla from the beginning of the year to the end of September.

The pickup truck is perhaps the most iconic vehicle in the US. In 2023, Ford's F-series model was the top-selling vehicle in the country for the 42nd year in a row, with sales exceeding 700,000 trucks. As a whole, sales of larger vehicles are soaring: SUVs and light trucks (pickups and minivans) account for around three in every four new vehicles bought in the US, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

As demand grows for EVs, car companies have started rolling out electric versions of the pickup truck. Ford, Chevrolet, Rivian and Tesla have all brought electric pickup trucks to market in recent years. Analysis by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) shows that electric trucks produce half the emissions of a traditional pickup over their lifetimes.

With its electric pickup, the F-150 Lightning, Ford has aimed to attract new customers "who were previously resistant to get into pickup trucks before they became electrified because of the emissions impact", the company's chief sustainability officer Bob Holycross tells the BBC.

But creating a new market for pickup trucks, even electric ones, has its own climate problems. And electrifying this iconic American vehicle isn't straightforward. From developing big enough batteries to power these behemoths to providing affordable alternatives, companies face significant hurdles. What will it take for the electric pickup to catch up?

Growing Electric, Hybrid, Truck Sales Back Q3 Gains; Ford No. 1 Brand

The F-Series now outsells the Chevrolet Silverado by 138,000 and the Ram by 282,000 trucks, expanding its lead as it aims to be America's best-selling truck lineup for the 48th consecutive year in 2024. F-150 hybrid sales rose 64% in the third quarter to 20,129, making it the best-selling hybrid truck.

GM is eyeing double-digit market share in the US EV market after sales surged 60% in Q3 compared to last year. With new models like the Chevy Blazer, Equinox, and Silverado EVs rolling out nationwide, GM looks to top rival Ford by the end of 2024.

With GM’s “EV for everyone” strategy finally unfolding, electric vehicle sales are surging. GM sold a record 32,095 EVs in the US in the third quarter, an increase of 60% from Q3 2023 and 46% from last quarter.

“GM’s EV portfolio is growing faster than the market because we have an all-electric vehicle for just about everyone,” Rory Harvey, GM’s executive vice president of global markets, explained.

Following the strong Q3 performance, GM is nearing double-digit EV market share in the US. GM’s share of the US EV market reached 9.5% in the third quarter, up from 7.1% in Q2 and 6.5% in the first three months of 2024.

All EVs across GM’s portfolio of brands had significant growth in Q3. Cadillac Lyriq sales reached 7,224, up 139.4% from last year.

is aiming to boost sales of its electric vehicles by addressing potential customer concerns through a new program that includes free home-charging installation and other benefits.

The “Ford Power Promise” program begins Tuesday for customers who purchase or lease a new Ford EV such as the F-150 Lightning pickup truck or Mustang Mach-E crossover. Part of the goal is to relieve financial burdens of EV ownership such as the need for a home charger. The program also seeks to educate new EV owners about the transition from traditional gas vehicles.

“Absolutely, we’re trying to grow our business but the best way we can grow our business is to serve our customers well,” Marin Gjaja, chief operating officer for Ford’s Model e EV business, told CNBC. “Filling up at home is really key, but so is confidence in the durability and life of the battery.”

The program launches as EV sales grow at a slower rate than many previously expected. Early adopters fled to the vehicles, but automakers have experienced problems expanding sales to mass market buyers due to costs, charging infrastructure and other hurdles.

Ford’s program aims to address many of those concerns, Gjaja said. It was conceived to address what Ford is calling “change anxiety,” a play on the common industry concept of “range anxiety,” which refers to the fear of an electric vehicle losing battery power between charging stations.

Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free tech just got a big upgrade with the launch of BlueCruise 1.4, and the automaker is hyping it as the “best hands-free highway driving experience yet.”

After a rocky start with the first version, this latest update is all about making the system smoother, more reliable, and, above all, less annoying. The biggest change is how BlueCruise now handles curves.

BlueCruise 1.4 fixes that by slowing down more naturally, letting you stay in hands-free mode without interruption.

Another major tweak is better performance in “diverse” weather conditions. Ford admits that earlier versions of BlueCruise were too eager to disengage in rain or harsh sunlight, which meant more unexpected handovers. BlueCruise 1.4 now keeps a steadier hand in less-than-ideal situations, giving drivers a more dependable experience.

Ford’s testing shows that BlueCruise 1.4 lets drivers stay hands-free up to eight times longer than the 1.0 version. That’s a bold claim, but the Blue Oval seems confident. It’s coming first to the 2025 F-150 and Lincoln Navigator, with more models in the pipeline— and more updates down the road.

There is no mention if Ford has fixed a problem plaguing BlueCruise since day 1: darkness. There have been investigations by the NTSB into BlueCruise following an accident involving a Mach-E and a Honda CR-V stopped in the center lane with no hazards.

GM launched the 2025 Blazer EV, which will be available with a full (FWD, AWD, RWD, and SS) trim lineup.

The 2025 Chevy Blazer AWD and RWD trims offer more range and horsepower than the previous model year. It also has new options, including Midnight and Sport packages (LT trim).

GM’s hands-free driver assistance, Super Cruise, is now standard on the SS model. It’s also available on LT and RS AWD variants. A two-tone roof is available for the LT and RS models.

The 2025 Chevy Blazer EV price starts at $45,995. However, that’s for the FWD trim, which will be available at the end of the year.

Mercedes is still waiting for approval from German regulators before pushing out a software update to customers of vehicles that support Drive Pilot. But once that happens, the company boasts that it will have “the world’s fastest Level 3 system in a series-production vehicle.”

The Good: Super Cruise Was Nearly Flawless.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of this roadtrip was how well GM's

Super Cruise autonomous driving technology performed on the way there and back. I previously wrote an op-ed about this, which I invite you to read for more details.

Arguably the best system currently out there due to its high level of redundancy and ease of operation, Super Cruise helped us all focus more on the crying baby than on the road ahead.

Yes, I still needed to keep my eyes on the road the entire time (or the system would have turned off), but the fact that I could trust the car during the long and boring stretches of highway made my away-time that much less stressful.

The Ford Mustang currently holds the title of the only muscle car left on the market in North America—well, at least until the new Dodge Charger decides to make its grand entrance later this year. With zero competition in sight, Mustang sales have predictably taken off, soaring a whopping 54 percent last month compared to the same period last year. Turns out, being the last one standing can really do wonders for your numbers.

More precisely, the Mustang managed to move 3,164 units in August 2024, up from 2,036 in August 2023. That brings Ford’s year-to-date total for the pony car to 33,817 units—a 17.7 percent boost over the same period last year.

Ford Lightning carries EV sales growth in August

The American automaker sold 182,985 vehicles in the US last month, showing 13.4% growth from last August.

Ford’s electric vehicle sales rose 28.9% to 8,944 units. The F-150 Lightning accounted for most of the growth, with 2,858 units sold, up 160.7% year over year.

F-150 Lightning sales reached 21,121 through the first eight months of 2024. That’s up 86% from the 11,327 sold at this time last year.

The Mustang Mach-E saw modest sales growth, with 5,341 units sold in August, up 6% year over year. Ford has sold 32,167 Mach-Es through August.

Despite slowing growth, Ford’s Mach-E is still edging out the Hyundai IONIQ 5 in the US. Ford sold 32,167 Mach-Es through August, topping Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 with 26,982 units. However, Hyundai revealed the updated 2025 IONIQ 5, which will be the first vehicle built at its new plant in Georgia.
